Q&a / Alycia Debnam-Carey, Dior’s first Australian ambassador, on Sofia Coppola, Sigourney Weaver and Cate Blanchett, and coming Netflix releases It’s What’s Inside and Apple Cider Vinegar
Alycia Debnam-Carey may not be a household name yet but if you watched her in series such as Hulu’s Saint X and Amazon Prime’s The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, you know the 30-year-old actress is one to watch.
Born in Australia and now based in Los Angeles, Debnam-Carey has been acting from a very early age and had her big break almost a decade ago in hit drama series Fear the Walking Dead.
She is also Dior’s first Australian ambassador, a recent development that has turned her into a red carpet darling.
How does it feel to be the first Dior ambassador from Australia?
It’s very special and exciting. It’s such an incredible fashion house and a family that I’m very excited to be part of.
Is there anything you discovered about the brand that really struck you?
Were you always into fashion as a young girl growing up?
I’m a fashion girl at heart and grew up poring through Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and for me being part of something like this has always been a dream of mine.
How do you feel when you wear Dior?
Dior does such a great job at representing femininity but in all versions, so it’s about strength and power and elegance and beauty. I love that it’s a brand that celebrates women and has always celebrated women. Dior himself had a sister and loved her and it’s always been a celebration of such strong women. I’m so happy to be part of a brand that has always done that and it’s not just a new or recent thing.
When did you realise you wanted to work in entertainment?
I did my first film when I was eight and it felt like a circus with all these amazing performers – it was very creative and there were so many big personalities and it was very fun and free. When I realised that people could do that for a living, I decided that I wanted to do that.
You’ve done both TV series and movies. Which do you prefer and how are they different?
I like both and now because I’ve done a lot of TV, I want to do more films. On TV shows you become close with the crew because you’re working together all the time and they become like a family. With movies, I love that it’s constantly changing. You can dip in and out of a character or time period, and then it ends. I like that there’s a very clear beginning and end, so I want to do more of that, but there are so many great series too. The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart with Sigourney Weaver is one of the projects I’m most proud of.
Are there any actors or directors you particularly admire?
What do you have coming up?
I just finished working on a Netflix miniseries, Apple Cider Vinegar, that’s coming out at the end of the year. It’s about the rise of the wellness influencer and how that happened in the 2010s. And I have a movie also coming out on Netflix that was acquired at Sundance for US$17 million. It’s the sixth-highest-selling movie at Sundance. I don’t even want to tell you what’s about because it’s one of those movies you should watch without knowing. It’s called It’s What’s Inside and it’s like a sci-fi comedy.
