Migrating to a new server

Recommended Posts

I will shortly renew the setup of my unraid server. I will move to a new case, mobo, memory, cache drives and a new license.

I will move to:

- Jonsbo N3 case

- asrock z790M-itx

- i5-14600T

- 64 gig memory kingston fury beast

- 2TB Samsung 990 pro for appsdrive

- 4TB Crucual mx500 for cachedrive

i will migrate my array drives out of my current chassis.

why ? Current setup (supermicro/xeon) is kind of power hungry and also my current case can hole 25 drives externally accessible wit lh supermicro drive bays, it looks nice but I do not use all of them a y more (I used to mine Chia coin and had this thing totally filled up).

also: I just like to build a new system 🙂

my approach:

- build the system hardware wise

- on my old server turn off vm and docker and then migrate the vmdisks and the docker and plugin configs to the array

- boot up new systemwith a fresh usb, get the new license on it

- set up new appsdrive and cachedrive

 - now take the old array drives and put them i to the new system

- new config themin the correct slots

that should bring all my shared back, correct ?

- now migrate the vmdisks from the array bacj to the new apps ssd and set them up (create new vm with same settings as old one and import the vmdisks).

sofar so good.

now for docker and plugins i have an approach but maybe there is a better one:

- install the same dockers i used to have on the old system in the new system, use the same settings;

- turn off docker

- overwrite all the appdata folders that were created with new installs with the copies i saved in the array

- start docker back up.

I think I am correct that that will work right ?

i  aware that i could also just use old usb and license and a lot of this stuff will migrate automatically, it really want to start over.

whats your thoughts  ?
