Oktoberfest Girls’ Trip in Munich: A Complete Guide

Oktoberfest is the world’s largest Volksfest (beer festival and traveling funfair) held annually in Munich, Germany for two weeks. This iconic event is steeped in tradition, dating back over 200 years ago on October 12, 1810, in celebration of the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria, who later became King Louis I, to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. Now, the festival attracts millions of visitors from around the globe each year. People travel to Munich to immerse themselves in the unique Bavarian culture, enjoy the festive atmosphere, and partake in the wide array of activities and attractions that Oktoberfest offers.

Depending on the number of your group, planning an Oktoberfest girls’ trip requires some preparation months ahead to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience because most of the tables and hotels get fully booked by the end of April. This comprehensive guide will cover everything you need to know, from booking a table online and renting Bavarian outfits to finding reliable transportation and the best places to stay.

Where does the Oktoberfest Take Place?

Oktoberfest takes place in the city center of Munich, on the Theresienwiese (Therese’s Meadow), a 100-acre space of land that has been used for the festival since the wedding of Princess Therese to King Louis I. It is a short distance from the Old Town and in the middle of Munich’s Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt district

When is Oktoberfest Happening?

The first thing to note is that it does not start in October. Instead, Oktoberfest starts toward the end of September and ends on the first week of October.

The Oktoberfest Dates for This Year

The Oktoberfest does not have an annual affixed date so the dates typically change yearly based on what date the third Saturday in September falls on. This year’s and next year’s Oktoberfest dates are:

Oktoberfest Tips for Solo Female Travelers

Getting a seat at a table at Munich’s Oktoberfest is easier for solo travelers since there are often open slots for one or two people at multiple tables. Booking a single seat online is typically more straightforward than trying to reserve seats for a large group. For solo female travelers or small groups of friends, Munich’s Tourism Office offers convenient package deals. These packages include a table reservation at Oktoberfest, a beer stein, Ferris wheel access, and a guided tour of the festival grounds, providing a seamless and enjoyable Oktoberfest experience.

How Much Does It Cost For a Table or Seat at Oktoberfest?

Entry into the beer tents and reservations for tables is mostly free. However, the majority of tents have a minimum consumption charge that covers two steins of beer (a stein is about 1 liter) and one chicken at about 44 euros per person. So if you are booking a table at a tent that requires the payment for food and drinks ahead, then a table of 10 will go for about $440. Also, note that access to Oide Wiesn, the historic Oktoberfest, which takes place in the southern part of the Theresienwiese with historical rides, festival tents, and booths attracts a fee of 4 euros for entry.

How to Book a Table Online for Oktoberfest

Booking a table at one of the Oktoberfest beer tents is most crucial if you plan to visit on a Friday or Saturday because the tents get closed to walk-ins once it is overcrowded. Booking a table is available for groups of 8 to 10 on the official Oktoberfest booking site; the tables fit 10 people. If your group is less than that number, you may visit the website of the tents directly to book seats on a table.

Sunday visits are usually less crowded and weekday visits before lunchtime on non-public holiday days are great for walk-in visits (October 3rd is a public holiday in Germany). Altogether, it is better to reserve a seat to avoid long queues and inconveniences.

The beer tents accept reservations several months in advance, as early as January for the regulars and from February to April for early booking. If you miss the chance to book during those months, reservations reopen in August if early reserves are not paid. If your group decides to visit last minute, there is also a secondary market in September where people exchange or sell their reserved tables. Click on this link to book online with the official provider. To book directly with each tent, see the list of the tents below:

  1. Choose a Beer Tent: If you’re looking to party with other travelers, the Hofbräu-Festzelt, Löwenbräu-Festzelt, and Paulaner Festhalle are great for that. If you’re not a fan of beer, a few tents serve wine too! See Marstall FestzeltFischer-VroniArmbrustschützen-Festzelt, Schützen-Festzelt, Käfer Wies’n-Schänke, Schottenhamel-Festhalle, and Kufflers Weinzelt (most popular options for wine drinkers).
  2. Visit the Tent’s Official Website: Each tent has its reservation process, so click on the tent names above for a link to the tent’s official website to follow through with their process. Some of the sites don’t translate completely to English, so make sure to have your preferred translation app handy.
  3. Select Your Date and Time: Reservations are typically available for specific time slots, so choose the date and time that works best for your group.
  4. Provide Necessary Information: Fill out the reservation form with your details, including the number of people in your group and any special requests.
  5. Confirm and Pay: Some tents require a deposit or advance payment for food and drink vouchers. Follow the payment instructions to secure your reservation.

Renting or Buying a Bavarian Outfit – Dirndls

Wearing traditional Bavarian outfits, such as dirndls for women, is part of the Oktoberfest experience. Here’s how you can rent or buy a Bavarian outfit:

Renting a Bavarian Outfit in Munich

  • Many of the stores offer the option to book ahead online and have it delivered to your accommodation or you may go to their stores in Munich to try it on before picking it up. The popular stores are Bavarian Outfitters, Lederhosen Rental, and Dirndl.com.

Buying a Bavarian Outfit

  • Online Stores: Purchase your dirndl in advance from online stores like Alpenclassics and Trachten24. You may also purchase varying quality options from Amazon depending on your budget. These stores offer a wide range of options, and you can have your outfit delivered to your home.
  • Munich Stores: Munich has many stores selling traditional Bavarian clothing. Check out stores like Lodenfrey, Ludwig & Therese, and Stockerpoint for high-quality dirndls.

Tips for Choosing an Outfit

  • Fit and Comfort: Ensure your dirndl fits well and is comfortable for long hours of wear. Also wear tights or shorts under your dirndl, it gets cold at night.
  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: High heels may look cute with your dirndl, but blisters after a few hours of dancing or standing do not make for a fun day.
  • Accessories: Complete your look with a blouse, apron, and traditional accessories like necklaces and hairbands.
  • Order Early: Once you have your table booked, make sure to purchase or rent your dirndl months ahead of time as it gets more expensive and out of stock in September.

Reliable Car and Taxi Services

Navigating Munich during Oktoberfest can be challenging due to the high volume of visitors. Reliable car and taxi services are essential for safe and convenient transportation.

  • Be Aware of Knockout Drops: A tasteless, odorless, and clear drug that some use to incapacitate others for nefarious reasons; GHB.
