MARIS Releases New Song “Julia Roberts”
Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter MARIS released the first single of 2024 called “Julia Roberts” on May 17, 2024.
The song follows up “Voicemail”, which was release last October.
MARIS wrote and produced the song with Jeremy Hatcher, who also worked on her previous song “Voicemail”.
MARIS said of the song, “'Julia Roberts' is a musical documentation of a time in my life where I watched Pretty Woman obsessively because I was so lonely after moving to LA by myself, and it was the only thing that could make me feel better. Lyrically, it explores the inner dialogue I have while being attracted to women, yet still seeking external male approval. I was looking at myself and other women through the male gaze with a sapphic lens and dancing around the issue of being a queer woman attracted to women, but also competing with them.”- MARIS shared on social media, “I'm so fucking excited to finally put this song into the world. It started as a diary entry, living in LA and spending just about all free my time alone, watching Pretty Woman on repeat as a comfort movie and wishing I could be swept up and taken care of like Vivian is. She's a little rough around the edges, a little bit cynical, and has a quick temper, but Edward sees right through her self preserving facade and loves her anyway.”
She continued, “And suddenly I was hyper aware of my competition for male validation and protection, while also being attracted to the women that I’m 'competing' against. This song feels like a good place to shake that competitive feeling and those insecurities away, while celebrating a truly radiant woman. Julia Roberts I adore you.
