I feel like they could be rather similar, Farryman was a job after all

Hermes and Charon both carry souls to a destination, and both have a connection to coins, and the satirist Lucian toyed with what Hermes and Charon might say to each other, but there the similarities end. Hermes is a god who acts in the world, and carries the souls of the dead to Hades, while Charon carries shades across the rivers Acheron and Styx to Asphodel or Elysium. He has one very specific job and accepts payment to speed the process, but is not a god with much interest in the world of the living.

Would it be absurd to consider “the handoff” to be a “costume change”?

I don't know, but I see no reason to.
