A third Top Gun movie is in development with Tom Cruise on board to return once again as Maverick. Whether Top Gun: Maverick actor Jon Hamm will also reprise his role as Cyclone remains to be seen, but the actor is pretty confident about his return chances.
In a new interview with Screen Rant, Hamm shared what he knows about Top Gun 3. He said he hasn't had any official talks at this time about returning as Cyclone, but that doesn't mean that he expects to be excluded. The actor hinted that the film could still be years off from actually getting started, so it could be a while yet before the actors are formally approached. For what it's worth, Hamm believes he may be one of the first to know once the film nears production, given his friendship with producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

"I have not had any official talks," he said. "I was very happy to hear that they're gonna make another one. I think the response to the second one was — let's be honest, the response to both of them has been pretty great, and I was very happy to be a part of the second one. I'm pretty good friends with Jerry Bruckheimer, so I'm sure if there's plans for Cyclone to come back, I'll hear about it sooner rather than later."
"I don't think they're going to be lighting into production anytime soon, but I would certainly love to be back."
He added, "But I know that these things take quite a long time to put together and realize in the way that people like Tom and people like Jerry Bruckheimer are very careful with putting those things together. Joe Kosinski did such an amazing job over the course of four years making that movie that if I hear, it probably won't be anytime soon. [Chuckles] I don't think they're going to be lighting into production anytime soon, but I would certainly love to be back. That'd be great."
