The catholic tradition of having the candlelit procession is around the corner as the catholic embers and the general public prepare for celebrations. The months of May are dedicated to celebrating the Virgin Mary, as Catholics in Rome and across the world focus their prayers and thoughts on her and the role she played in the Christian faith. Romans are preparing to begin the celebration on Saturday, May 18, and the subsequent Saturdays and Wednesdays throughout the month.
Apart from the members of the Catholic Church, the general public is welcome to be part of the celebration as long as they dress modestly.
Wednesday will be a special day as the St. Peter Basilica will open the doors for the pilgrims from 4 pm to the processions. This will also be followed by the feast of Mary, Mother of the Church.
The participants will turn up in hundreds and gather under the night sky, holding flickering lights in their hands. You will hear the ‘Hail Marys’ and ‘Our Father’ prayers during the procession as the people are united in one faith.
The candles in the procession represent Mary’s guiding light and purity throughout her life. This is one of the Catholic events that brings people from different faiths and religious groups together. The procession will end with a prayer at a church, making people feel renewed in peace as they leave. This is an event that you do not want to miss.
