New 'Insidious,' 'I Know What You Did Last Summer,' & New Blumhouse Horrors Land 2025 Release Dates

The horror genre is off to a strong start in 2024 thanks to films like “Immaculate,” “Abigail,” and “In A Violent Nature.” But 2025 is already shaping out to be a banner year, with many genre entries getting new theatrical premiere dates this week. So what’s next year’s most anticipated horror movie on the docket? It could be Sony‘s “I Know What You Did Last Summer” remake, which THR reports will hit theaters on July 18, 2025.

Do Revenge” director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson directs the remake of the classic ’90s slasher from a screenplay she co-writes with Sam Lansky, with Neal Moritz producing.  Leah McKendrick wrote a previous version of the script. But the big question here is whether Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. will return to reprise their roles from the 1997 film and its 1998 sequel.  THR previously reported they were in talks to return, but then again, neither appeared in 2006’s “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer,” which featured an all-new cast.  It’s also unknown if the new remake has any connection to Amazon‘s shortlived 2021 series of the same name. Probably not is the best guess: like MTV‘s “Scream” series, the Prime Video show is likely a standalone take on the IP.

“I Know What You Did Last Summer” is a big break for Robinson, whose last two movies, 2022’s “Do Revenge” and 2019’s “Someone Great,” were both for Netflix. Robinson also has writing credits on “Unpregnant” and “Thor: Love & Thunder,” but helming a remake that’s already an adaptation of a 1973 novel shouldn’t be too much trouble for her to handle.

Meanwhile, in the house that Jason Blum built, there are several upcoming Blumhouse horror pics with new theatrical release dates. First off, the known entities. Deadline reports that Scott Derrickson‘s sequel “The Black Phone 2” moves from June 27, 2025 to October 17, 2025: a more premier date for a hotly anticipated movie.  “M3GAN 2.0” also switches dates, moving from May 16, 2025 to June 27, 2025.  Ethan HawkeMason ThamesMadeleine McGrawJeremy Davies, and Miguel Mora return for “The Black Phone 2,” while Alison Williams and Violent McGraw return for “M3GAN 2.0.” It’s still unclear if “M3GAN” director Gerard Johnstone returns to direct the sequel.

Elsewhere at Blumhouse, three major titles have official release dates, most importantly “Five Nights At Freddy’s 2.” “Five Nights At Freddy‘s” surprisingly ended up the most successful horror movie of 2023, grossing $300 million, numbers that guarantee a sequel.  Emma Tammi returns to direct it, and it’ll land in theaters on December 5, 2025, although there’s no word if Josh Hutcherson or Matthew Lillard return yet.  Then Christopher Landon‘s latest Blumhouse offering “Drop” will hit theaters on April 11, 2025. There isn’t a logline for the thriller yet, but it stars Meghann FahyBrandon SklenarViolett BeaneJacob Robinson, and Ed Weeks. And then another thriller, “The Woman In The Yard,” hits theaters a couple of weeks before, on March 28, 2025. Plot details are also under wraps for that one, but Jaume Collet-Serra directs with Danielle Deadwyler starring.

Finally, Deadline reports that Blumhouse and Sony have yet another “Insidious” movie on the way, and it’s not the Jeremy Slater spin-off starring Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani. Instead, that sixth entry in the horror franchise will follow up last year’s “Insidious: The Red Door,” which was star Patrick Wilson‘s directorial debut. The latest “Insidious” movie will hit theaters on August 29, 2025. As for Slater’s spin-off, stay tuned for an official release date for that one.

That’s a lot of new horror movies added to the 2025 calendar, which was already stacked with the likes of Danny Boyle‘s “28 Years Later,” which hits theaters on June 20, 2025.  And with 2024 not even half over, expect several other genre films to get 2025 theatrical dates before the year closes.
