Recorded in a Toronto basement over the span of a few months, Root Work, is the debut release from electronic duo Gan Banna. After arranging the tracks, they were eventually given some star mixing treatment, whereupon they sat patiently on the shelf — collecting dust and biding their time.
They’re ready. They’re steady. We dare say, they’re heady. Opener “Derum” is a moody, bent-out-of-shape little character, with a bassy bridge to knock the stank out of your socks. “Brisk Vista” plays like a colourful spacewalk, driven by funky live bass guitar and saccharine synth stabs. Bringing up the rear is “Ocean Swill”, a drum-heavy expanse, that hand-holds the listener through a nuclear wasteland.

Daryl Keating (a music journalist who got sick of writing words and started writing music)
