Doctors in Gaza: A surgeon whom Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., credits with saving her life is among the group of doctors stuck in Gaza, NewsNation has learned. Some of the doctors said they are unable to safely leave the area following Israel’s seizure of the Rafah border last week. Dr. Adam Hamawy, a New Jersey-based plastic surgeon, is part of a group. In 2004, he worked as a surgeon in Iraq and treated Duckworth after a Black Hawk helicopter she was piloting was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. Duckworth said Tuesday she’s in direct contact with Hamawy and is “working hard to secure his group’s immediate evacuation.” Full report >
Rafah: The group of doctors was scheduled to leave Rafah on Monday so another mission could take over aid work. Two doctors told NewsNation they were sheltering at a hospital and waiting for a way out. A State Department spokesperson said it is aware of reports of U.S. citizen doctors unable to leave Gaza, adding the U.S. government has no control over the border crossing or who is permitted to depart Gaza. What’s going on: Former President Jimmy Carter’s oldest grandson said his grandfather is “coming to the end” after spending more than a year in hospice care. Carter is the oldest living president at 99 years old. “My grandfather is doing OK. He has been in hospice, as you know, for almost a year and a half now. Background: On the evening of Feb. 3, 2023, a Norfolk Southern train derailed as it traveled through East Palestine, sending dozens of train cars off the tracks. On Feb. 6, 2023, officials in East Palestine vented and burned five tank cars full of vinyl chloride. The EPA gave the all-clear days later for those who evacuated the area to return. Residents complained of sickness and rashes. Boeing woes: Boeing violated a settlement that allowed the company to avoid criminal prosecution following two fatal crashes involving its 737 max aircraft more than five years ago, the Justice Department told a federal judge Tuesday. New 737 Max jets crashed in 2018 in Indonesia and 2019 in Ethiopia, leaving 346 people dead. Boeing reached its $2.5 billion settlement with the Justice Department in 2021.
