Timothy Spall and his true-crime BBC thriller ‘The Sixth Commandment’ won big at this year’s BAFTA Television Awards with P&O Cruises.

Spall pipped ‘Succession’s Brian Cox to the Best Actor gong for his performance as Peter Farquhar, an elderly man who fell victim to the psychopath behind the so-called Maids Moreton Murders. The Sixth Commandment’ also won the BAFTA for limited run drama.

‘Happy Valley’s Sarah Lancashire won Best Actress for her turn as police sergeant Catherine Cawood in the smash-hit BBC cop drama.

Matthew Macfadyen picked up a richly deserved Best Supporting Actor for turning Tom Wambsgans into everyone’s favourite slimy interloper in HBO/Sky Atlantic’s mega-hit show ‘Succession’.

And there was good news for another seminal show that came to an end last year, with ‘Top Boy’ and its star Jasmine Jobson winning for Best Drama Series and Best Supporting Actress respectively.

Best Female Performance in a Comedy went to Gbemisola Ikumelo for her turn as hapless undercover cop Dom in the BBC’s excellent ‘Black Ops’, while ‘Juice’s Mawaan Rizwan won Male Performance in a Comedy.

In the Best International category, ‘Class Act’, a Netflix series about French tycoon Bernard Tapie, saw off a powerhouse field that included ‘Succession’ and ‘The Bear’.
