Kate Middleton's parents could become Earls of Bucklebury

Could the Middletons become earls of Bucklebury? For some time now there have been rumors in English high society circles that the parents of the beloved Kate Middleton they could and indeed, according to some they deserve to receive a noble title thanks to their efforts during these difficult months. Carole Middleton's daily dedication is now in the news as she is going out of her way to help her daughter Kate who is undergoing preventive chemotherapy. For the Princess of Wales, her mother is a pillar and a great support. And even Prince William, in this difficult period, would have relied heavily on his mother-in-law from whom he would have drawn comfort, reassurance, as well as precious practical help for the management of the three children. And the relationship between the Prince of Wales and his in-laws has grown from strength to strength. It is no coincidence that during the Easter school holidays at the country estate in Norfolk, the Middleton seniors were also there together with the Princes of Wales and Carole was spotted with her son-in-law William while enjoying a few hours of relaxation in a local pub.

During a new royal duty in the north-east of England, the future king, speaking of his wife who is fighting cancer and their three children George, Charlotte and Louis, assured: “We are all well”

Carole: an indispensable resource for the ailing Princess of Wales

The princes were certainly happy to have their grandparents at home with them given the support they have given them all these months, ever since Kate underwent major abdominal surgery in January. Carole has always been at her side and not only took care of the children but she tried, as is her spirit, to offer reassurance and hope, thus allowing William to resume his royal commitments with serenity. It is said that Carole, a very pragmatic and active woman, immediately made herself available to accompany her three grandchildren to school, at Lambrook school, in Berkshire, which is only 15 minutes from Adelaide cottage, the home of the Princes of Wales in Windsor , and just a half-hour drive from Blucklebury, where the Middletons live. That the former stewardess became, from the first moments of Kate's illness, a precious resource is also demonstrated by the first stolen photo of the Princess of Wales after the abdominal operation, filmed by the paparazzi of the American agency TMZ, which portrayed Kate in the car with her mother driving, near Windsor Castle. For this reason, as some royal observers have explained, the Middleton parents have become as important to the future of the monarchy as the Windsors themselves and deserve formal recognition for their work. “They should be Earl and Countess of Bucklebury or something,” their friend, the tycoon Sir John Madejski, also said a decade ago.

A beautiful portrait of the couple on their wedding day was released by Kensington Palace. “Thirteen years ago today,” reads the caption. For the princes the moment is not easy, thanks to her illness, and the subjects hope to be able to see her again soon, so that the fairy tale that began on 29 April 2011 can continue

A second family for Prince William

On the other hand, it is nothing new that William has also found a second family to rely on with Kate. Carole has always offered Prince William a safe haven, becoming almost a maternal figure for him and filling the emotional gap due to the early loss of her mother, Lady Diana, who tragically died in an accident in August 1997.

For royal expert Christopher Andersen, author of The King: the life of Charles III: «Carole has always been there for him as much as William was for Kate. On the other hand, the relationship between William and his stepmother, Queen Camilla, although now cordial, has always been cold.”. The Middletons, however, welcomed him with open arms and were always “affectionate and welcoming” with him, as well as “easy going”. And again: “Prince William felt that, when he was with them, he could relax and be himself.” According to experts, the prince would be even closer to the Middleton seniors than he ever was with his father. And there are many episodes, even past ones, that confirm this bond of affection. One above all, Christmas 2012, when the future king's decision to spend the holiday at the Middleton house, and not at Sandringham with the royal family, caused a sensation, thus breaking an ironclad tradition that seemed immutable. According to royal experts, the charm that Kate exercised on him also derived from the strength and unity of her family relationships with her parents, Carole and Michael but also with her brothers Pippa and James. The Middletons, in moments of crisis and difficulty, have always had the extraordinary ability to form a team and support each other, without losing heart. In 2014 Pippa speaking to Today of his sister he had said: “We are very close. And, you know, we support each other and exchange opinions and things.” Prince William has always been very close to James, Kate's younger brother, and it was the royal's commitment to mental health that pushed James to speak openly, for the first time, about his depression.

Not all experts agree on the titles…

The hypothesis and hope that the Middletons will receive a title in the future, when William ascends to the throne However, not all real experts agree. Danielle Stacey, royal correspondent for Hello! magazine he explained that “it is very unlikely that Carole and Michael Middleton will be given titles, even though they will one day be the parents of the Queen Consort.” Camilla's parents, Major Bruce and Rosalind Shand, died before their daughter became queen but the other members of her family are also untitled. Her children, Tom Parker Bowles and Laura Lopes, have never received this honor despite her mother being queen. Only Camilla's sister, Annabel Elliot, was named one of the Queen's companions, the modern version of ladies-in-waiting. It may therefore be possible that even Princess Catherine, when she becomes queen, will want her mother Carole or her sister Pippa to be at her side as ladies-in-waiting, without however giving them any noble title or official honours.

The high-class origins of the Middleton family

Going back in time to dig into genealogy, we discover that the paternal branch of the Princess of Wales' family still had a history of privileges and ties with the British high society of the time and that the fortune of the Middletons, Carole and Michael , former stewardess and former flight pilot respectively, was largely inherited, as well as being the result of the proceeds deriving from the gadget company, Party Pieces. Kate's great-grandparents, paternal grandparents of her father Michael, were in fact members of the wealthy Lupton family, originally from Leeds, of whom we especially remember the figure of Olive Christiana Lupton (the princess's great-grandmother), a very charismatic woman, educated in the prestigious Roedean school in East Sussex and dedicated to charitable causes for disadvantaged women. Olive's father, Francis Martineau Lupton, was a justice of the peace and a liberal parliamentarian. His mother, Harriet Albina Davis, died of influenza after the birth of their fifth child. Olive, after the death of her three brothers in the war, inherited with her sister Anne, all the family wealth and the textile company. She married the lawyer Richard Noel Middleton, who joined her family business, with whom she lived in a sumptuous residence in the Leeds countryside, frequenting the homes and members of the aristocracy of the time.

Olive's ties to the nobility of the time became even closer when her cousin Kate married Baron von Schunck and when his daughter, Florence Von Schunck, became Baroness of Airedale, a title which allowed her to attend George's coronation V in 1911. Before she died in 1936, Olive created a trust fund for her four children, one of whom was Kate's grandfather, Michael's father, Peter Middleton. This money has been passed down through generations and disproves the myth that the Middletons are completely self-made. But the connections with the royal family don't end there. By a strange fate, in 1962, Captain Peter Middleton, Kate's grandfather (a commercial airline pilot) was appointed as Prince Philip's co-pilot, Queen Elizabeth's husband, accompanying him on a two-month tour of South America. The two got along so well that the Duke of Edinburgh later sent him a private letter of thanks and a pair of gold cufflinks. The origins of the family of Carole Middleton, born Goldsmith, are decidedly more humble. Kate's great-grandmother, Edith Goldsmith, raised six children in a working-class suburb for train depot workers in West London. She was a tough woman and was soon widowed, forced to raise her children in conditions of great poverty. Her son Ron, Carole's father, left school early and at 22 married shop assistant Dorothy Harrison, a very ambitious woman who educated his children to aim high in life.

King Charles' last gift to the Princess of Wales

Meanwhile, speaking of honors, let's remember iThe prestigious title that King Charles awarded to the Princess of Wales by naming her, on St. George's Day, Royal Companion of the Order of the Companions of Honour. Kate is the first member of the royal family to hold the title in the Order's 107 years of existence. The latter was founded by King George V in 1917 to recognize outstanding achievements and important contributions over time in the arts, sciences, medicine and public service. The insignia consists of a gold medallion attached to a red ribbon topped with a crown. It depicts an armored knight on horseback and an oak tree from which hangs a shield of the Royal Arms. The motto is engraved on the blue enamelled edge: “faithful in action and clear in honor”. Current members include Sir David Attenborough, Margaret Atwood, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Elton John, and previously Professor Stephen Hawking and Sir Winston Churchill.
