It’s the most magical time of the year. American Idol‘s annual Disney Night arrives this Sunday (ABC, 8/7c), and TVLine has your exclusive first look at the setlist for the long-awaited event.
It’s another eclectic mix of familiar tunes, some that were written for classic Disney movies, and others that were merely featured in Disney-owned films during pivotal moments.
The movies represented by this year’s setlist include: Cars, Cars 2, D3: The Might Ducks, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Hannah Montana: The Movie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, The Little Mermaid, Onward, The Princess and the Frog, and Toy Story 4. (Let’s not forget that “Disney” is a much larger umbrella than it was when Idol first introduced this annual theme night many years ago.)
For those who haven’t been keeping up with American Idol this season (and how dare you?), we’ve got five singers left in the competition: Abi Carter, Emmy Russell, Jack Blocker, Triston Harper and Will Moseley. And by the end of Sunday’s two-hour broadcast, we’ll know which three are headed to the grand finale on May 19.
Read on for a full breakdown of who’s singing what on Disney Night this Sunday, then drop a comment with your thoughts. Which song are you most looking forward to hearing? And which finalist has your vote?
Abi Carter will get in touch with her inner Little Mermaid, performing Ariel’s iconic ballad from the 1989 classic.
Singer-songwriter Emmy Russell will take on this Brandi Carlile tune featured in one of Disney’s more recent releases (2020’s Onward).
Jack Blocker will then put his spin on this Brad Paisley song, which is heard in 2011’s Cars 2.
Triston Harper is getting jazzy with a performance of “Almost There” from 2009’s The Princess and the Frog.
Simultaneously nothing we would ever expect, yet also a perfect marriage of hats, Will Moseley will be performing a song from Toy Story 4. (Then again, when you remember that it’s a Chris Stapleton original, the choice makes a lot more sense.)
Abi’s voice is made for this Fleetwood Mac jam, which you’ll find on the soundtrack for 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Emmy’s second song, a Miley Cyrus original from 2009’s Hannah Montana: The Movie, perfectly captures the spirit of this competition.
We’d never expect Jack to pass up the chance to perform a David Bowie song, like this one, which was featured in Indiana Jones’ 2023 return to the big screen.
Come on, did you really expect a Disney Night to go by without someone performing this Rascal Flatts earworm?
Will’s second Disney Night pick is this Steppenwolf song, featured in the third installment of this beloved hockey movie trilogy.
GET RID OF JACK BLOCKER.!!!
NOOOOOOOO WAAAAAAYYYYY
He’s the best!
I’d have expected Triston to sing “I just can’t wait to be King” from The Lion King.
Jack Blocker had my interest from the start. He is entertaining to watch. His facial expressions, his interpretations, decent voice.. He puts on a show. That’s what I’d pay to see in concert. Tristan is also in the same category, but has age a bit . In a few years I’d pay to see him in concert. He will be great – Garth Brooks-isih. Emmy , good, but typical. B/c of heritage she will get air time. Will good, but typical – but a little to stiff. Abi above typical..
Just my opinion. Love to read others opinions too.
It will be interesting to see where they all are a few years after Idol.
Jack is a good singer but his facial contortion is not pleasant to look at.
That is just down right mean. Sorry if that offends you. My brother is 56 and was born with a hair lip, and mentally challenged, not by choice. God made him special. He has respect, kindness, a big heart and live for people, and he was made fun of his entire childhood all through school years, even throughout adult years, but he he works, has lots of friends, has a home, and pays his bills and has a family that loves him. SO shame on you.
Philip Phillips was even worse. But I loved him and he won
Looks like my fast forwarding button will get lots of use.
Jack Blocker a truly unique talent who deserves to be in the Top 3!
Honestly, who cares!
they already voted off the BEST Singers in the competition!!! :
their voting system sucks & this is what happens year after year when ONLY the South & East gets to vote live! :
All “country singers ” & young cute boys, w. not HALF the talent of others who were in top 24! ;
Voting Needs to be overnight & results the next day!!!
So the ENTIRE Nation – west coast – has equal say , so results are more fair! ;
when 100’s & 1,000’s of fans are complaining online & I even heard the live audience once shouting BS , BS, BS…
Maybe there’s a “problem” ;
and it needs to be changed!
With the remaining 5 left, think Abi Carter will be the next American Idol.
Life is a Highway was re-done by Rascal Flats in Cars, but it is a song written by Canadian musician Tom Cochrane. Give him the credit, not Rascal Flats!!
Can hardly wait!! They are all unique but one stands out Abi Carter. Talent in every score. Good wishes for the finale to find the true best Abi Carter!!
Emmy Russel will have a career. Even if she loses. She is a bright talent in a special corner. But Abi Carter’s star is brighter everywhere. ✨️
I wanted Emmy Russell win American idol I did vote for her only
Will Mosley is going to win I believe.
when the only 2 black finalists were voted off by “america”- though wildy talented- I realized that American Idol is only for caucasian americans
Terrible song selections by Abi. This might just knock her out. Mo and Blocker shoRGuld go through.
JACK ALL THE WAY. ALSO ALL IF YOU MAKING FUN OF THE WAY SOMEONE’S MOUTH MOVES WHEN SINGING IR TALKING ISNT KIND. SHAME ON Y’ALL. I JAVE A BROTHER THAT WAS BORN WITH A HAIR LIP, HE IS NOW 56, AND ONE OF THE GREAGUYS YOU WILL EVER KNOW! ABI IS AMAZING! EMMY IS GOING THROUGH, I BELIEVE BECAUSE OF WHERE SHE COMES FROM! TRISTAN YOU JUST GOT TO LOVE HIM! WIL GREAT GUY. BUT HE IS GOOD! THE TALENT IS GETTING TOUGHER EVERY YEAR. I DO HATE TO SEE THE AFRICAN AMERICAN TALENT BE WASTED, THEIR VOICES ARE A GIFT FROM GOD. THAT I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND, WHY THEY ARE VOTED OFF, MY OPINION. IM JUST A CAUCASIAN MIMI THAT LOVES EVERYONE! I SAY GOOD LUCK TO THEM ALL. THEY ALL WILL HAVE A FUTURE, IF THEY WORK HARD TO REALLY WANT BE A STAR. EVEN WITH THE ONES THAT WERE VOTED OFF, STILL CAN BE RECOGNIZED. GOD HAS A PLAN FOR EACH ONE OF US. LET’S ALL JUST BE KIND, THE WORIS UGLY AND HATEFUL ENOUGH. WE HAVE A ALMOST 7 YEAR OLD GRANDSON, THAT IM PETRIFIED FOR HIM GROWING UP IN THIS SCARY WORLD. GO IDOL
TRISTON IS MY FAVORITE SINGER THAN ABI. IM PRAYING FOR TRISTON TO WIN . HES SO YOUNG AND GOT A GOOD VOICE. 👍🏻 🤧
