It wouldn’t be summer in San Francisco without Stern Grove Festival, and this year’s lineup for the beloved free concert series is one of the best in recent memory.

Founded in 1938, the festival takes place amid the eucalyptus trees of the Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove, a 33-acre natural space in the Parkside neighborhood that’s home to one of the city’s three natural lakes. The grove forms a natural amphitheater for thousands of music fans who lay out blankets and picnic spreads on Sunday afternoons, many lining up outside the park for hours before the noon opening time in order to obtain a prime viewing location. Last year’s series featured talent ranging from the Indigo Girls to Flaming Lips.

Festivalgoers and fans of the Flaming Lips show up big for the band's closing show of the 86th annual Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2023.

The 2024 lineup is a master class in booking that skillfully spans genres and time periods. It opens June 23 with Canadian indie pop duo Tegan and Sara, supported by Oakland afrofuturist King Isis. Next up are Los Angeles rockers Chicano Batman, with Colombian Canadian Polaris Prize winner Lido Pimienta opening. The SF Symphony is slated to appear July 7, featuring special guest Broadway singer Jessica Vosk, followed by the vintage soul music of the Commodores on July 14 (with eight-piece Oakland funk band the Grease Traps on opening duties).

The rest of the summer’s lineup includes Jamaican-born saxophonist and R&B singer Masego (with Oakland neo-soul singer Satya), London electronic duo Franc Moody, lo-fi guitar hero Alex G (Oakland’s Fake Fruit opens), keyboard legend Herbie Hancock (alongside SFJAZZ Collective), Americana songwriter Lucinda Williams, electronic pop duo Sylvan Esso (supported by Poolside), and a finale on Aug. 25 featuring the one and only Chaka Khan.

Concert attendance is free; however, due to the festival’s popularity, Stern Grove implemented a ticketing system in recent years to deal with capacity issues. Tickets will be released one month before the date of each show, with reserved tables available with a donation. See the full lineup on Stern Grove’s website.
