The Epson US support site shows a Firmware update dated 03/04/2024. This file contains the Epson SureColor P900 Firmware enhancement version KI15O1.

    Anyone know What this addresses?

Epson sometimes post details, or at least a description, of printer firmware updates but only, AFAIK, on their Japanese site. People have pointed me in the right direction to get details on updates for my 7500, for example.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

    How good is your Japanese?

    Absolutely!

The frustration though is when we need to upgrade one item in the chain to be compatible with some other installation, and then the upgrade causes its own set of issues – because these systems are so complex, the varieties of operating environments so diverse and the arrangements to assure compatibility of one thing to another within the industry being less than one would hope for.

Well, I take another aproach, especially with firmware.  When my printer asks for a firmware update, I update it.  Most likely this firmware has a lot to do with the new features in the Media Installer. I have never had an issue with any P800/700/900 firmware updates.  So do it.

Just search for all the folks complaining after blindly updating their Epson firmware, it’s eye opening. Yeah, if and when we are told why (new media I need), OK. Otherwise potentially bricking my printers blindly when they run just fine seems unnecessary and potentially dangerous.

I had three URLs pointing out such issues, but this forum software tells me this site needs some firmware fixes <g>

Printer firmware updates are much less of a problem than MacOS updates. The latter are the ones one really has to be careful about.

Andrew – typically Epson does not tell us why – at least in English on English language websites. We are left with taking their word for it. My experience with Epson firmware updates is the same as Kevin’s – never had a problem with it. I have had major problems updating both Apple and Adobe software – and the forums I believe are replete with far more complaints about those than they are with Epson firmware. I would add as well that with Epson software we have two animals: the firmware and the driver. From what I’ve observed more issues get fixed up-dating drivers than firmware, but I can’t claim any expertise on the exact division of labour between the two.

Adobe and Apple update their software far, far more often, and what they are updating is far more complex and involved (the security aspects of an OS update alone are important to consider). Comparing them to the rare firmware updates of a piece of hardware isn’t a very good comparison. Even Apple and Adobe tell us what and why (in English, no less). But sure, if you feel blindly updating firmware is something you want to do, go for it. FWIW, my P900 told me I have a firmware update, and yes, they give me a choice to not do so. Thankfully, it ain’t broken (yet).
