What travellers are saying
- Ravindra VHyderabad, India1,476 contributionsThis island has a great fortress and excellent views and of course needs a lot of walking. You would need to catch a ferry from market square to reach here. The ferry is for a short duration. There are enough restaurants within this place.Written 4 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Phayao13Stockholm, Sweden6,463 contributionsAn architectural masterpiece where the church room has sunlight beaming in from skylightsWish you were here for a music session as the acoustic should be fantastic.A very popular destination so that quiet moment in the church may not occur.A little surprised to have to pay entrance to a churchWritten 4 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Angeliki_LambrouGreece33 contributionsThe Helsinki Cathedral overlooks the National library and Senate Square and is probably the main tourist attraction in Helsinki.
The large white cathedral looks very grand. It is free to enter.
The inside of the cathedral is rather plain compared to most others, so can be underwhelming. It was built between 1830 and 1852.It is in the shape of a Greek cross with a colonnade on each arm. Look up and see the twelve apostles on the edge of the roof. Inside the cathedral, there are statues of reformers, Martin Luther, Philipp Melanchthon and Mikael Agricola .Overall though a must visit, and probably your first place to visit, on any trip to Helsinki.Written 22 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Probably would have been more interested if I was not flying out that day and had room in my luggage for food. They have free public restrooms too - so that is a bonus. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the Helsinki Harbor area.Written 28 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - SwedishtomcatDiss, UK4,363 contributionsWe followed the snaking trail of tourists up the steps and into the church. As it was rather busy we took a quick look at the ornate interior and departed but not before spotting a man wearing an All The Stations hoodie!Written 17 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - FluffyFlamingoGermany40 contributionsSpent a great day on the island and at the open-air museum. We went on a Sunday, so we expected it to be quite crowded, but in the morning it wasn't too full.
Very interesting collection of traditional wooden houses.
There are many squirrels on the island, but we managed to see only one.
If we visit again we're going to bring our own lunch as we found it difficult to find an open cafe.Written 17 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. You can buy one or multiple days (up to 11) at any iKioski. The pass is good for 24 hours or more days from the time of purchase. There are three areas ABC. The pass was good for train, metro, tram, bus, and ferry. With the tram covering most of the City and with multiple trams per hour, it was the best way to get around. And very affordable. You can see many of the sites (but do visit and explore) right from your window. The ride is smooth, quiet and not so fast you cannot enjoy the passing scenes. You get a real feel for the city from the comfort of a forward facing window seat.Written 4 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The urban workshop of the 2nd floor was particularly impressive. Wish we had something like this where we lived, I'd never be out of there. The top floor children's area is a delight, and I love that they allow everyone to walk/sit on the entire structure, making for a really special experience - lots of little places to sit and get lost in a book, with an amazing view outside. Cafe downstairs looks great - we didn't try it but it smelled and looked delicious. Even as a visitor, there's things to do - play chess downstairs, eat at the cafe, enjoy the views, explore the architecture, just soak in the lovely calm atmosphere and community vibes, or read a book!Written 1 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This was a lovely chapel to go to - interesting architecture. It was nice to see the tourists respecting the "silence" aspect of it. I sat in here for about half hr just enjoying the peace and quiet.Written 12 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JariVarkaus, Finland153 contributionsMy first time in this building. The building itself was stylish and the art exhibition of Eero Järnefelt was amazing with lots of paintings and what a quality! I'm not an art lover, but these paintings made a big impression on me.Written 20 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
