As an overview of one of the trailblazing bands of the San Francisco sound, this two-disc assortment of unreleased studio and performance oddities takes a backseat to another two-disc collection, Sons of Mercury, a 1991 best-of retrospective from Rhino. That said, Lost Silver and Gold is of definite interest to devotees of the band and Bay Area psychedelia in general, as well as younger jam-band fans interested in delving deeper into '60s rock than the Grateful Dead. Quicksilver's foundation was the tandem guitar attack of John Cipollina and Gary Duncan, a duo capable of consistently inventive (if occasionally long-winded) improvisation. (Greg Elmore and bassist David Freiberg rounded out the crucial QMS lineup.) Lost Silver and Gold supplements the lengthy live opening disc with a briefer set of unreleased demos, rarities, and soundtrack recordings that illustrate the group's strengths (terrific interplay) and weaknesses (shaky vocals). --Steven Stolder

After having had the privilage of enjoying Quicksilver live at the original S.F. Fillmore during the summer of '68; they became my favorite band. I loved Moby Grape, Sly & the Family, the Dead, Love, Vanilla Fudge, Electric Flag and The Sons of Champlin...but the cast of Quicksilver,(primarily John Cippolina) were just too f'ing cool! It took me a year, but I convinced my parents into purchasing me a brand new '69 Gibson SG Standard...because that's what John played.

Naturally, my favorite track on this CD is the studio version of 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You'#one of their earlist, most flawless recordings#. The live versions of 'Gold & Silver' and 'Who Do You Love'are wonderful #it's like being at their gigs#. Also notable are the studio versions of 'I Hear You Knockin' and Acapulco Gold and Silver..the whistling is too cool. ENJOY!

For more than 40 years, I've followed the San Francisco music scene and a huge fan of QMS and Grateful Dead, but this album is a mess. It sounds like a compilation of someone's mediocre bootleg audience tapes haphazardly put together for the sake of selling it to make money. This is not historic material that will ever be listened to more than once. Wish I had my money back. Stick with the Capitol released originals. Happy Trails is still your best choice if just wanting to hear the best from this band. Too bad there are not copies from soundboard tapes of live shows such as the Dead's 'Dick's Picks' series as QMS was truly one of the best SF bands live! But do yourself a favor and pass on this one. Should have stayed 'unreleased and lost'.

Quicksilver Messenger Service - 'Lost Silver And Gold' (Collector's Choice Music) 2-CD

Know for a fact that I hadn't listened to / reviewed any QMS in quite awhile now. Vaguely remember seeing this title in record stores when they still were in existence. Disc one seems to be from various live gigs that Quicksilver played sometime in 1968. Tunes that I wound up spinning a couple of extra times over were their rocking cover of Willie Dixon's "Back Door Man", the memorable twelve-minute "Gold And Silver", "Dino's Song", the well-delivered thirteen-minute "The Fool", the foot-stomping Bo Diddley gem "Who Do You Love" and the the awesome eleven-minute "Mona / Maiden Of The Cancer Moon / Mona". Disc two gives us some really great unreleased QMS studio and demo cuts. Songs here that I got the most out of were "I Don't Want To Spoil Your Party", "I Hear You Knocking", the well-played "Your Time Will Come", the rocking Bo Diddley-penned "Who Do You Love (Part 1)", "Walkin' Blues", the Buffy Sainte-Marie cover "Codine" [had no idea that the Canadian composer wrote this often played QMS tune], the Erik Darling-penned "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" (didn't Zeppelin also cover this song?) and one I don't at all remember "The Bears". Duration - 2 hours, 4 minutes. Includes an eight-page CD booklet with liner notes and pics. Overall, a nice compilation CD to have / own. Other live QMS releases that I've found some long-time QMS fans might not be aware of - 'Live At The Avalon Ballroom, 1966', 'Kabuki Theatre' 2-CD, 'Live At The Summer Of Love' 2-CD, 'Fillmore Auditorium - San Francisco, 1967' and 'Reunion, 2006' 2-CD - I actually got to see them on this tour co-headline with Jefferson Starship (legalities prevent them from using the Airplane moniker). Enjoy.
