Audience Member Stunning cinematography and melodrama at its finest from star-producer Mary Pickford and writer-director Frances Marion. While the two women were in Italy (Pickford on her honeymoon with Douglas Fairbanks), they heard a local legend of a woman who fell in love with a soldier, who used her lighthouse to send messages during World War I. So they adapted the tale into this beautiful tragic film. A crew member almost lost his life during the climactic storm scene. Marion orchestrated the real thing, not a special effect. Very powerful in its day. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member Hilariously depressing. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member A stunning silent film that is truly timeless.... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Wow, this was a very dramatic, suspenseful, romantic, melodramatic film. Pickford did a great job with this film. You really sympathize with her character, she's gone through so much in this movie. It's very sad, and then the ending is very good. I recommend it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member the first silent movie I have ever watched..all the way through. It was for my American film class. pretty depressing, but the movement and facial expressions were sufficient in understanding the story.
