Lone Star Park Track Details
Address: 1000 Lone Star Pkwy, Grand Prairie, TX 75050
Website: www.lonestarpark.com
Meeting: Due to the popularity of multiple breeds of horses in Texas, Lone Star Park runs both a thoroughbred meet and a quarter horse meet. The thoroughbred meet commences in mid-April and ends in mid-July. The primary race run during this meet is the Grade 3, $300,000 Steve Sexton Mile, which attracts some of the top older dirt runners from around the country. The thoroughbred meet also hosts several stakes races for Texas-breds. The quarter horse meet begins in late September and ends in early November, and is headlined by the Grade 1, $1 million Texas Classic Futurity.
History: Located in northeast Texas between Dallas and Fort Worth, Lone Star Park opened in 1997, the result of a half-cent sales tax instituted in Grand Prairie in 1992 with the aim of building a racetrack. The town then created a sports authority, which would own the track and lease it to a track operator. Though Texas racing has seen a precipitous decline in recent years, Lone Star remains a focal point of the local horse racing circuit.
Facilities: The centerpiece of the facility is a 280,000 square foot, glass-enclosed, grandstand with a seating capacity of approximately 6,000. The grandstand features seven levels in all, with plenty of dining options and scenic views of the racetrack.
