However, the girls find themselves on opposite sides of the good-evil divide, challenging not only their friendship but also their identities. Directed by Paul Feig, the film wades into themes of friendship and belonging, and the relationship between good and evil.

  • The Karate Kid
    3
Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan, Taraji P. Henson
    11 votes

Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith star in this remake of The Karate Kid, which captures the spirit of the original while adding its own unique spin. For starters, the movie takes place in China instead of California, and features Kung Fu instead of Japanese-Okinawan Karate. In the 1984 movie, the protagonist Daniel LaRusso is a high schooler. But in this version, Smith plays a 12 year-old named Dre Parker.

The result of these changes is a family-friendly movie with the same heart of the original movie. It's also very suitable for tweens, who can relate to Smith's character.

  • Monster House
    4
Steve Buscemi, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mitchel Musso

This movie is takes the concept of a haunted house to the extreme. In Monster House, three tweens discover that the abandoned house on their street isn't just spooky — it's alive. This animated supernatural horror film unravels in some pretty wacky ways, but it's always entertaining. It's even got some adult jokes hidden in there, like when Chowder asks Jenny if the house "is a girl house" because it has a uvula. Very clever.

Monster House may prove to be too dark for young kids, but tweens will love the spine-tingling thrills that are waiting around every corner.

  • Spy Kids

Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Alexa PenaVega
    16 votes

Tweens in the early 2000's know that Spy Kids is where it's at. But today's tweens can still be introduced to the spy family film via Netflix. While the graphics may pale in comparison to what we have in action movies today, it adds to Spy Kids' campy charm. Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara play Carmen and Juni Cortez, two siblings whose parents just happen to be undercover spies. When Carmen and Juni are captured by the villainous Fegan Floop's life-sized thumb henchmen (yes, you read that correctly) and taken to his castle, they soon learn they have more powers than they ever knew about.

Spy Kids is fun for all ages, but hits close to home for those in the tween demographic. After all, who doesn't want to be a secret agent at 12 years old?
