So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Mama says truth is all that matters
Lying or deceiving is a sin
Drifting through a world that's torn and tattered
Every thought I had don't mean a thing
Don't stop, don't stop the dance
No, more music, don't stop the dance
Mama says love is all that matters
Beauty should be deeper than your skin
Living for the moment, lips and lashes
Will I ever find my way again?
Don't stop, don't stop the dance
No, more music, don't stop the dance
Don't stop, don't stop the dance
Mama says only stormy weather
Don't know why there's no sun in the sky
Footsteps in the dark come together
Got to keep on moving or I'll die
Don't stop, don't stop the dance
No, more music, don't stop the dance
Don't stop, don't stop the dance
No, more music, don't stop the dance
Don't stop, don't stop the dance
Lying or deceiving is a sin
Drifting through a world that's torn and tattered
Every thought I had don't mean a thing
Don't stop, don't stop the dance
No, more music, don't stop the dance
Mama says love is all that matters
Beauty should be deeper than your skin
Living for the moment, lips and lashes
Will I ever find my way again?
Don't stop, don't stop the dance
No, more music, don't stop the dance
Don't stop, don't stop the dance
Mama says only stormy weather
Don't know why there's no sun in the sky
Footsteps in the dark come together
Got to keep on moving or I'll die
Don't stop, don't stop the dance
No, more music, don't stop the dance
Don't stop, don't stop the dance
No, more music, don't stop the dance
Don't stop, don't stop the dance

This is also the second song I've found by a former Roxy Music member whose lyrics have been replaced by those of a song by band with a number in their name (Gang of Four and now 10cc). Odd.
I told my wife that Bryan Ferry would be Jarvis Cocker's father because he's so cool and nonchalant. Showing pure class and style, this song really shows it.
Now about the lyrics, the message relays a simple idea. And that is that mother was always right about life's curveballs. Simple yet effective and that's why I love it.
Joder! This man is pure sensuality! The dandy of pop, Jealous of British music! They are too much.
