A Whangārei couple chose the perfect wedding date to secure photographs in front of Saturday night's dazzling night sky aurora.

Wedding photographer Greg Campbell told Newshub they were "so lucky" - but said he was also feeling luck on his side to capture the special moment.

"I've been shooting weddings for 12 years and this is absolutely a first for me. For my wife and I, seeing an aurora was on our bucket list," he said, calling it "a once-in-a-lifetime experience".

Campbell said the "super-cool" couple, Eve and Kelsin, also had perfect weather to tie the knot - something that's a "roll of the dice" in autumn.

Their luck only improved when a caterer, who Campbell knew well through working together over the years, ran to him excited.

The caterer knew Campbell had been into storms and weather-chasing overseas so pulled him aside to see the spectacle.

"He told me to come see it [the aurora] right now… we saw it with our own eyes," Campbell said.

The newlywed couple were having dinner at the time, but it was worth interrupting.

"I said 'you need to come outside right now'."

Love was in the air, and good thing it was in order to get the perfect crisp shot.

"They had to kiss for 13 seconds to make this shot work… what a moment," Campbell said. "Unbelievable."
