Suburban Long Island living in commuting distance to New York

Named for the region of Central Europe many of its first settlers came from, Bohemia is a residential hamlet in the South Shore Long Island town of Islip. These immigrants worked in cigar factories and farmed, a history that is commemorated at Cerny’s Bakery, a landmarked National Register of Historic Places site. Only 50 miles from New York City, many of Bohemia’s residents commute to work. “One advantage of living in this community in the middle of the island is proximity to major highways,” says Todd Yovino, a licensed agent, broker, and owner at Island Advantage Realty. “If you can reduce your daily trips into the city by 15 minutes each way, you’ll save 10 hours a month.”

Planes, trains and automobiles

Bohemia is located between Route 27, Sunrise Highway and the Long Island Expressway. Depending on traffic, it takes an hour and a half to two hours to reach Midtown Manhattan. The Long Island Railroad from nearby Ronkonkoma takes an hour and 20 minutes. This terminal is a major transit hub for central Long Island, but commuters who get on the train here have the advantage of getting a seat as train fills as it gets closer to the city. The neighborhood is located right next to Long Island MacArthur Airport, which has low-cost commercial flights to destinations on the East Coast and Florida.

I like Bohemia because it is quiet and feels safe. Ive lived here for 18 years and I've never felt unsafe. I would like to see developers revamp the shopping centers, and install sidewalks on the residential roads.

I live in a suburban area. There is, however, an industrial area that has businesses.
