Ash and Anvil Clothing Update | Shark Tank Season 9

Detroit entrepreneurs Eric and Steven identified a common struggle for shorter men: finding clothes that fit well. Dress shirts, in particular, were always too baggy and didn’t fit. Tailored options often meant venturing into the kids’ section – not exactly a confidence booster.

With a few of the sharks themselves being shorter men, will they invest? Let’s see if they make a great fit with the entrepreneurs in this Ash and Anvil update.

Shark Tank Ash and Anvil Pitch

Ash and Anvil Update
  • Entrepreneurs: Steven Mazur and Eric Huang
  • Business: Dress shirts for shorter guys
  • Ask: $100,000 for 12.5% equity
  • Result: $100,000 for 25% equity
  • Shark: Mark Cuban

Eric and Steven began their pitch by lamenting how difficult it is for shorter guys to find clothes. At the end of the presentation, they rip off the shirts they wore to reveal shirts from their clothing line, Ash and Anvil.

They capped the pitch off by offering the sharks perfectly sized Ash and Anvil samples.

Robert Herjavec inquired about the definition of “short,” and they replied that it meant five feet eight inches or less.

Daymond John, himself 5’8″, took a humorous turn by measuring himself against the entrepreneurs.

Kevin O’Leary inquired about the sales figures. Eric responded that they’ve achieved $130,000 in sales over the past nine months. He further explained that each shirt is priced at $79, with a production cost of around $35 per unit.

Steven then chimed in, highlighting that they needed the money for additional inventory.  He presented a market opportunity: since roughly one-third of men in the US are under 5’8″, their target market represents over 40 million potential customers.

Robert and Lori Greiner both bowed out because they didn’t feel like the right partners for the business.

Daymond, meanwhile, passed on the opportunity for reasons that may not have aligned with the target market of short men.

The bidding came down to Kevin O’Leary and Mark Cuban. Mark offered $150,000 for a 25% stake, but Steven and Eric wanted to hear from Kevin first. Mark refused.

Kevin then countered with a $100,000 offer for 15%, prompting Mark to drop out.

Seeing an opportunity, Steven quickly chimed in, asking if Mark was still interested. Mark re-entered the negotiation, and they closed the deal at his original offer of $150,000 for 25% equity, leaving Kevin out of the deal.

Was Eric and Steven’s return to the deal a smart move or a big mistake? Get the full story in our Ash and Anvil Update.

Shark Tank Ash and Anvil Update

Sadly, during our Ash and Anvil update research, we found that the deal with Mark never closed.

However, undeterred, the duo are still in business but under a new name: Ash & Erie. The name change arose from trademark concerns with a larger company.

Eric and Steven showed their resourcefulness as they secured funding independently.

Our Ash and Anvil update reveals the business reached $1 million in sales by May 2018, just seven months after their appearance on Shark Tank

A year later, their venture funding round brought in an additional $1.2 million. In total, they’ve raised over $5 million since the show.

As of December 2021, their annual revenue sits at over $1 million. Building on this success, their website updates from August 2022 showcase the introduction of new clothing lines, including premium polos, summer shorts, and rain jackets.

This expansion strategy paid off because their annual revenue has grown to over $2 million!

With a new brand and product line, things are looking positive for our next Ash and Anvil update.
