About
Cuivre River State Park is a bit of the Ozarks outside of the Ozarks – a nature lovers paradise just a short drive from St. Louis that is vibrant with colors three seasons of the year. The park’s renowned trails take visitors through prairies and forests of oaks and hickories. The park’s three natural areas feature sinkhole ponds and woodlands that would be more at home in southern Missouri. The park has hiking and equestrian trails, modern campsites, group camps, picnic areas and a lake so everyone can enjoy one of Missouri’s most rugged and beautiful jewels.

First time visit. We wanted to check out the tent campground. The guard at the gate wouldn't allow us to enter just to drive through and check it out. Were told we needed to have a reservation to just look at it. Every time we go to a camping area we always drive around to find a site that we like before signing up. Not here. Very annoyed at this rule. So we went down to the creek. Great place to relax and let little kids play in the water. Very user friendly. Then we went down to the lake to check out the beach. Disgusting. Water was murky and smelly. Once you get past the sandy bottom, the bottom turns muddy and slimy, and your feet sink into the muck. The foul odor of the water permeates your clothes. The changing/restrooms were gross. The floors were slimy and wet. Smelled worse than the lake. Like a filthy restroom at a run down gas station. We couldn't wait to get home and take a hot shower. The creek was the only good part of the visit. But there are other creeks to visit that are closer. Indian Camp Creek is a great one. We will not be returning. Once was enough.

Lot of trails. Decent hiking. We hike here often. Many trails connect so you can do a lot of miles in one day with different environments (7+ -or less- or so miles). Nothing excessivelyy hard or hard to follow. If you don't need real remoteness then you are OK here. Slow down and enjoy the peace. Lake trail for summer flowers. Prairie trail (short 1 1/2 mi) for summer blazing star when blooming. Woods trails for spring flowers. Woods trails for less people and noise. Wear boots or decent footwear. Slow down and see, listen, smell, hear.

Cuivre River State Park is gorgeous. You can tell it's well-taken care of. There's places to camp, picnic, swim, boat, hike, and fish. Or, if you just need a nature fix riding through the park is what I imagine heaven to be like. Beautiful, amazing resource for all your nature needs.

The rest rooms in the RV park are checked each day but the only thing done is the toilet paper changed and the floor swept. Sinks and toilets are not cleaned. The lawn has not been mowed in a long time. Dandalines have turned from flower top to seed tops.you can,t rely on the camp host being at the kiosh. They have a sign up saying if you need something go to there camp site. I believe that manage is reallypoor or non existing.wake up and clean up!

Can rent canoes and kayaks for only $10 for 2 hours. Prairie grass area. Very deverse. Stayed in elect water sewer campground. Clean and quite. Will difinately come back again with family.

We went hiking here. We live close by but this park has numerous hiking trails. We did the Big Sugar creek trail hike. It is almost a 4 mile hike. It takes you along the big creek on the bluff. It is beautiful. Took a little over 2 hours. We took our dog..he loved it.
We also hiked the Blazing Star trail. It was 2 mile hike. It took about an hour. It has a large creek bed that the trail weaves in and out of. Easy hike...lots of great photo shots!

Recently stayed that the campground here in a travel trailer. While we were arriving there were some issues with flooding and to say the signage to get in the park was less than best was putting it mildly. I don’t count 8x11 pieces of white paper with handwriting on them as signage when you are traveling down a highway pulling a camper. The campground itself had nice size lots in the full hookup loop and were mostly level. The bathhouse and shower houses were not up to par with other State parks we have stayed in. Appeared that it had been awhile since they had a solid cleaning and were consistently out of paper products. We did not receive a map or activity sheet upon arrival but found the beach area ourselves. It was a nice swimming beach with kayaks, paddleboards and paddle boats for rent. However, during our stay there was a sign posted indicated that the waters may not be suitable for swimming at that time due to recent testing, so we did not get in the water.
The park itself had some pretty elements to it but I doubt we stay again. There are so many other prettier, cleanlier state parks in MO that we would rather visit.

We hiked the 7.5 mile red loop in early July and although there were some nice parts, most of the trail was muddy and seriously littered with horse poop. Of course some of that is to be expected since it's a biking/equestrian trail, but come on, droppings EVERY 5 steps for the entire 7.5 miles? We'll go elsewhere next time.

On the bright side, the staff at the visitor's center were nice, and the stone shelter seemed to have ok facilities including a playground and sheltered picnic tables.

We have hiked and mountain biked both at Cuivre River State Park. The trails east of route KK are only open to hikers and are a great places to take a hike. There's a out and back trail off the loop that goes back to a small lake. The main loop is about 4 miles long and takes you across creeks two times and past one spring that has always been running when we have been there. Frenchman's Bluff is a nice short hike and is a very nice view, but if your not into the walk you can drive up the gravel road and see it.
