HS girls’ soccer: Staunton to the regional championship match, Carlinville and Southwestern bow out

The Staunton High School girls’ soccer team, led by seniors Aubrey Dugger, Bre Feeley, Ali Fritz, Jessica Futrell, Lexi Hester, and Presley Rantanen, defeated Gillespie 8-0 in the semifinals of the IHSA Class 1A Greenville regional May 10. North Mac still alive as of May 13

In high school girls’ soccer, Staunton punched its ticket to the regional championship match while Carlinville and Southwestern bowed out in the first round of the IHSA Class 1A postseason last weekend.

Seven different players etched their name onto the scorecard as Staunton buried arch-nemisis Gillespie, 8-0, at the Greenville regional May 10.

Breanna Feeley led the charge for the Bulldogs with two goals.

Jillian Meyer, Katie Pritchett, Ryenne Dugger, Lydia LaRosa, Lacie Edwards and Samantha Fulton additionally contributed to the offensive outburst with one goal apiece.

Freshman goaltender Madelyn Davin made nine saves.

Staunton returned to Bond county and battled Greenville for a regional championship May 14. The winner advances to the Riverton sectional , which begins Fri., May 17 at 4 p.m. at Riverton Middle School.

Prior to the regional title match, the Bulldogs had split two close regular season meetings with the South Central co-champion Comets. Staunton defeated Greenville 1-0 at a neutral tournament Mar. 30 but lost the SCC dual, 2-1, Apr. 25.

Staunton is 14-8 overall.

Carlinville and Southwestern bow out

Southwestern and Carlinville both bowed out in the regional semifinals.

After getting dismantled 6-0 by Greenville during the regular season, the Birds played with a new level of intensity and took the heavily-favored Comets to the wire.

Sophomore goaltender Skylar McDaniels denied 19 of 20 scoring attempts but the Southwestern offense was unable to get the ball downfield consistently for some offensive production. The Birds only managed a total of three shots all afternoon and fell short, 1-0, after Greenville sniper Emma Vieth broke the scoreless tie in the second half.

Carlinville went ‘one and done at the Hillsboro regional, losing 8-0 against top-seeded Alton Marquette.

Southwestern closes the season 6-16 overall.

Carlinville finished 9-8-2.

North Mac

North Mac battled Pana in Springfield May 13 for a chance to play state-ranked SHG for a berth in the Riverton sectional against the Greenville regional champion.

The Panthers limped through a rough regular season but finished it on a high note by winning 6-1 at Taylorville in the finale May 7.

Kate Loveless and Isabella Watson both posted hat tricks en route to North Mac’s fourth victory of the year.

North Mac entered the playoffs with a 4-17-1 record overall.
