Get Ready for a Creative Explosion at The Barrel House this June!

We can think of no better place to spend a week-long residency. Past experience is that songwriting sessions can get very intense, and often we are looking for external stimuli to help coax our best ideas from deep within our subconscious minds. That there is a vibrant program happening each night after a day-long songwriting session only gives us the opportunity to busk some fresh ideas with the local creative minds of Totnes. If we wanted to let Totnes put its fingerprint on our repertoire, we can think of no better way than to soak inspiration from its artistic community directly.

We’re teaming up with Jam Buddies to craft a song about “Spiritual Home,” inspired by the soul of Devon. Alongside, we’ll weave themes of refuge into powerful poetry sessions with Word Cafe / Poets & Pints, featured in our special Friday night performance with musical accompaniment by Good Trouble. Don’t miss our spontaneous jams with Be Water Open JAM, adding an unforgettable flair to our lineup. Mark your calendars for an exhilarating blend of music and poetry at The Barrel House! This lineup promises a deep integration of music and poetry, echoing the themes of community and spiritual connection throughout our engagements at the venue.

The Trouble Notes

The Trouble Notes are a progressive world folk trio. Known for their explosive energy and worldly melodies, the band was formed in 2013 by violinist Bennet Cerven and has since become renown in the international world folk scene. Their shows are packed full of surprises, known to feature international guest performers, adding to the energetic worldly sounds at the heart of their repertoire. They have toured extensively in Europe and North America. They have performed on Television in the USA, Europe, Japan and Brazil. They have played on many of Europe’s large festival stages and with major international acts like Jethro Tull, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and America.

Their second studio album, Liberty Awaits, was described by Earmilk Magazine as “a transcendent exploration and fusion of various folk styles, showcasing the rich tapestry of our diverse world.” BBC Radio’s Faye Hatcher said the band is “like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Their musical influences take you on a journey around the world. You can’t help clap very loudly, tap your feet or spontaneously jig along to their music! An absolute must-see!!”

Good Habits

Meanwhile, Good Habits, have only recently arrived on the UK scene after being ‘happily stranded’ in New Zealand for the pandemic launched their full-time musical adventure. Upon their return they won the Purbeck Rising Award, were celebrated as ‘Captivating’ by Songlines Magazine and performed at notable festivals including Glastonbury, Cambridge Folk Festival and Shrewsbury Folk Festival. Their award-winning, genre-fusion has received international critical acclaim and they are quickly establishing themselves as one of the most exciting new folk duos on the UK scene.
