Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has a wicked sense of humor, but he wasn’t joking when he, frustrated and as a last resort, declared on social media that he was tired of wasting his time mentoring untalented people, and had decided to charge people a consultancy fee. The post, which was widely shared, discussed and even dissed, became a talking point in the film circle.

Months after his Instagram post, Anurag Kashyap shed light on why he said what he wrote. Appearing on his daughter Aaliyah’s podcast, Anurag said that post “was not funny for me at all.”

Reacting to which, Aaliyah said how she has heard from the filmmaker time and again how people take advantage of him and his position. To which, Anurag said, “I don’t know why they seek validation from me. People have walked up to me and told me, ‘If you put your hand on someone he can turn into gold.’ I said if I had that power, I would put my hand on myself and would never take it off my head to remain gold!

“I have not even made a movie that can be called a clean hit. I have not seen that in my film, barring Sacred Games or Lust Stories… There is nothing I have done that can be called a clean hit. Every film of mine finds its audience four years after it comes out, that is the tragedy of my life. For once, I want people to watch my films when it is in cinemas so that even I make money.”

Taking to Instagram, Anurag had shared a note about charging film industry aspirants a consultancy fee. His note read: “I wasted a lot of time trying to help newcomers and mostly ended up with mediocre s**t. So now I don’t want to waste my time with meeting random people who think they’re creative geniuses. So I will now have rates. If someone wants to meet me for 15 minutes, I will charge Rs 1 lakh; for half-hour, Rs 2 lakh; and for 1 hour I will charge Rs 5 lakh. That’s the rate. I am tired of wasting time meeting people. If you really think you can afford it, call me or stay the f**k away. And all paid in advance.”

Festive offer

On the work front, the filmmaker is awaiting the theatrical release of his next film Kennedy, starring Rahul Bhat and Sunny Leone. The film is likely to release this year.
