This dude is a criminally underrated artist, who's been belting out the truth for decades

Love his music - his solo music and also the Mermaid Avenue albums that he made with Wilco. And his singing voice is so recognizable and compelling.

Yeah, that voice! It's not often you get to hear so much rich local accent in a person's singing

Agree. Richard Thompson is another one who comes to mind in that respect. (And also probably quite underrated--I know he's well-respected within the music industry, and he definitely has fans, but I'm sure he should have even more!!)

I enjoyed that moment when he opposed skateboarding at south bank in London as it intruded on the proposed expansion to the dressing room and also poor Luke, who’s dad was a bigwig in the culture department, was losing sales in his pie shop. Skateboarding and freedom of expression prevailed that day.

Yeah billy bragg lost me at this point

Billy Bragg's authenticity is like a breath of fresh air in today's music scene!

How do we stop the intrusive march of the phrase "my truth". It implies that truth is subjective, and it absolutely is not. How about we start with the truth and go from there?

Well Indy said Truth is the philosophy and Archeology is the search for Fact, so let’s start there.

They’re completely different concepts. And it’s weird to get picky about that in this context bc music is not particular a vessel for misinformation

Correct, he shouldn't be using the word truth when talking about a subjective art form.

Words describe reality, not the other way around. Everyone else understands perfectly fine what is meant by “your truth”.

Is there more than one reality? No. There's just one, where there's only one truth, which in our reality means something provable and factual.

You know multiple perspectives exist, right?

Absolutely. But that's not what truth means.

You realize it's a colloquial phrase? If you claim such language "wrong" and you only use literal language - you're wrong. "My truth" = my experience, my perspective, as articulated and expressed by me.

Edited

Ask any number of assholes that use the phrase "my truth" if they know what a colloquialism is and get back to me. It's been nothing but a tiny little tool in the continual push towards there being no discernable difference between truth and misinformation. It's exactly the same as saying "alternative facts".

Sorry but the phrase 'my truth' has no legs and cannot march, you're disconnected from objective reality

Sorry Billy your favorite political ideology has killed 150 million people. Communism has failed in every country it's been tried.

u/rumpusroom avatar

Bragg has never been a communist. Did you want to make something else up?

Edited

Sorry whateverdipshit, Billy Bragg is not a communist and never has been. He's a democratic socialist.

Let's count up the dead from WW1 and WW2 and the "discovery" of the new world

Before we move on to Vietnam and Iraq

I mean, Communism has its roots at the end of WW1, the horrific massacres and famines caused there after and active participation in the start of WW2 and onward.

Marx and Engels were writing in the context of the industrial revolution but its worth noting there have been classless egalitarian societies throughout human history. Its also important to remember the failed communist experiments in Russia and China etc. were distortions of Marx and Engel's original ideas (i.e., the Stalinist heresy); a true implementation of Marx's theory has never happened.

u/tattlerat avatar

Likely because it will never work and relies heavily on the hope that bad people won’t find their way to the top where state authority is concentrated and that citizens will magically overcome human nature like greed and jealousy.

They’re wonderful ideas but wildly impractical and the only way to get everyone on board is to force it on them.

Many capitalist countries have implemented features of socialism - which Billy advocates, and which is quite distict from communism -- Things such as free state-education, socialised healthcare, unemployment protections and welfare etc. In this sense, there is no 'successful' nation that has not implemented features of socialism.
