So far there have been TONS of criticism on Bilibili against the initial two episodes: they skipped too much and are more like a hollywood popcorn action movie, rather than a nuanced and epic story with shining characters. For Chinese readers, the original TBP trilogy had come short on character building already, but YHKT simplified them even more.
Visual effects aside, currently a popular opinion on Bilibili is that the fan-made animation series "My Three Body Problem" and the audio drama of TBP are still the best adaptations of this trilogy.
fan-made animation series?
My Three Body a Minecraft-style animated series, originally made by people on Bilibili. The first season back in 2014 is for the first TBP volume, but the visual effect is a bit rough. The second and third seasons are for The Dark Forest, both with English subtitles and visually better.
The full series is only on Bilibili. But some fans had uploaded them onto YouTube:
My Three Body - The Legend of Zhang Beihai
is that youtube link the whole show? or are there more?
That link is for the latest (third) season, the story of Zhang Beihai in The Dark Forest.
There are also some episodes from the first (for the first book) and second season (the story of Luo Ji) on youtube.
Oh I just found the first season (no English sub) and the second season (with English sub) on youtube.
Watched episode 1 last night, I’m fluent in Chinese, the adaptation is definitely based on the story but wow do they skip a lot of what I thought were important moments.
Don’t want to spoil it for anyone, but essentially it starts with a certain Panama scene…
No video game, no military meeting, etc…
Yeah important moments like the ENTIRE FIRST BOOK. Wtf??
as a none reader this anime would just be a complete WTF confusing mess.
I was turned off as soon as the common era military guys had exo suits like wtf
i think they are going to have some flashback episodes to explain book 1, start here to gain the attention of non-book readers and then explain the backstory in the middle of the season to give more context.
Leaving the entire first book and the Cultural Revolution scenes out would just not make sense.
Why would they when the upcoming netflix story will adapt that part.
No, it's just because their original plan was for viewers to watch Tencent's Three Bodies TV series first and then watch this animation afterwards, but Tencent's Three Bodies TV series was delayed.
How to watch with english subtitles?
Its will probably take a couple hours to fansub. That is if a team is working on it. I dont really know for any teams work on this project rn. If yes dm me ;)
For anyone who wants to try tackling this, I maintain a fork of an open source hardcoded subtitle extraction python library you can use to speed up the process (eg. passing the text through machine translation software). The underlying OCR library it uses is the best one I could find for Chinese. Here's a Google Colab notebook running it: https://colab.research.google.com/github/oliverfei/videocr-PaddleOCR/blob/master/videocr_PaddleOCR.ipynb
Where would you be able to find the fan sub? YouTube?
Bad news. Just watched some of it. This show is, how can I put it delicately, cliched and commercial trash.
Ya I was very confused. Seems an odd place to start the story and the scenes felt like a jumbled mess only loosely based on the books.
It has managed to borrow the worst aspects of anime tropes, Hollywood cliches, and trashy pop culture and blended them into an unrecognizable mess. It absolutely does great disservice to such an imaginative and groundbreaking literary work.
When reading the books, I always imagined it to feel like the Evangelion TV series somehow (NOT the comedy batch of episodes after Asuka's arrival), and not like the final product we have seen now. When watching the older CGI trailer (with old Ye Wenjie) with the same CG animation footage, it looked fine, but the added action stuff in these 2 episodes drags the whole thing down quite a bit. There's also a sparsely animated concept artwork trailer which captures the feeling of the book much better imo https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=b8-4FEeW5EE
im dreading it! I kinda got the feeling from the awful ED lyrics... well, gotta watch it later to contemplate more
The anime skipped 80% of book 1 and the characters traits are completely altered especially for Luo Ji, only focused on dramatizing action sequences, commercial trash indeed
They REALLY skipped a lot of the first book so far and rely A LOT on written exposition to explainthe Trisolaran crisis and the sophon block . So much history and context missing that explain how the condition of humanity contributed to its ultimate betrayal from within . Ye's story is completely skipped as well as anything leading up to Judgement Day . All that would have made for a great season 1 with Ye's & the Pacifist's conversation as the final cliffhanger!
Youtube or p2p. Depend on the teams. Good anime team can translate a simple episode of 20 min in 30 min. But I dont know how much time last a episode of TBP and I also suppose it take much longer because of the scientific language. Also, i'm not sure if someone already working on it. The English communities seem small.
Episode One: 36 minutes 47 seconds (including ADs/OP/ED)
Episode Two: 34 minutes 38 seconds (including ADs/OP/ED)
There's also a lot of text and background chatter, which would be nice to translate as well. If you want the subs for those to look nice it'll probably be a bit longer
Are there only gonna be 6 episodes?
There will be 15
Where did they say that? And are they released weekly?
On bilibili, And yes release weekly
Link please?
ohhhh we eating good

i mean that's Luoji, calm and rational
Yup. He probably had figured out the probability of finding a new girl within the next x days already, while she was sent flying high into the air and before her body hit the ground again. Besides, we know from the novel, that in reality that girl was a real B to begin with anyway.
Did I just completely forget about the 5 particle accelerators in earth's orbit? I don't remember reading about them but maybe I was zoning out while I read through a few pages by accident.
There was a 1 sentence mention about how Dingyi tried to measure natural particle collisions in space, and also a mention of "evidence" that there were more than two sophons, but not the whole experiment.
It was there - I think. I too was like wait.
The animation is much better than I expected.
In this (Chinese language) video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGjmuw4UNwo
someone does a quality check on EP04 regarding:
-the same CG people being used in the audience more than once right in the same shot
-unproportional head sizes
-transparent people in the audience
-empty seats in reflections in glasses or the camera lense
-use of photos for backgrounds
-Playstation 2 level textures
And so on. Seems like he did more videos.
I feel like the narrative is quite chaotic, and the characters feel ooc.
They skipped a lot of actually important plot lines and build-up. A lot of the premise is lost and the current state of affairs is just left blank. Like the opening action of cutting the ship is supposed to be the climax of a series of evens, revealing more of what sophons are and what they can do. Now the premise is lost, the scene just becomes a typical block-buster action sequence.
A lot of meaningless scenes. Like the spilled coffe scene played in slow-mo then rewind then played again. What is that supposed to mean? What does it accomplish? Also the villan stand-off scene after the car chase, it's ridiculous.
Characters don't feel like their book counterparts. Luo Ji is supposed to be this always-rational guy and a lot more nuanced, but now he's a hypomania and occasionally comic relief. Rey Diaz is supposed to be tactful and patrotic, but has the cruelty to do what it takes. Ye is supposed to be this nuanced combination of cruelty and care, who has lost hopes in humanity.
Plot holes.
He is also making fun of the thing (in Chinese only), esp the spilled coffe and the wallbreaker selection scene. Furthermore he says that he doesn't understand my things and that the shows drags along unecessarily. Like, is this one big commercial and haven't the makers learned anything from the minecraft staly "Wo de Santi" (amateur) show?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vz76RNUozJU
Seems like people LOVE making fun of the crappiness of this series
https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1SP4y1Y7h4/
Is this version worth seeing as a fan of the Chinese version?
No, the minecraft version is better if you want animated version of TBP
But both are good?
Mine Threebody is made by fans in minecraft style but great, the bilibili one is the worst TBP adaptation
I'll just leave this here:

I'm looking for English subtitles for this show... Could you help me?
Is there any way to watch the series?
If you're still looking, this channel has the first 2 episodes. If you don't speak Mandarin, you'll need to turn on english CC

That Alexandre dude has taken off the cc-ed episodes.

taken down
I think they are really making something like the Apple version of the Foundation series, with ideas, general plots, and character names kept but character characteristics changed dramatically. They surely didn't change the story as much as Apple did (yet, at least) but it seems to me that they also lack the length and funding like Apple Foundation so it doesn't makes it any better than that.
I cant believe this is being adapted with such care and fidelity to the original(ignoring the skipped parts), even if the Dan&Dave Netflix show ends up being horrible at least we are going to have this masterpice.
Things are obviously going to have to change due to a lot of the parts of the novels being extremely hard to adapt, but i'm extremely excited based off of this strong start.
Starting at the middle of book 2 and using book 1 as backstory is a great decision, since book 1 would be extremely slow to adapt chronologically, and this way some of the key characters that we would already know all about at this point can be explored in a different manner.
Starting at the Panama Canal scene was an amazing decision and sets up the main conflict of the series pretty well, the Trisolarian tech is also really well executed
one issue that may keep people from watching this is that the show doesn't do that good a job of introducing the main concepts, and I don't know if someone that has no knowledge of the series could follow this without having a ton of questions(some that you are supposed to have, and others that you would not have if they were adapting this chronologically.)
Starting in the middle of the plot makes some of the characters feel a bit flat, but i think they are going to have flashbacks to the Red Coast base and the VR game to flesh out the book 1 characters.
For now I kind of like the series, but it is a little bit confusing! The world is introduced too fast, I think people that didn't read the first book are finding it very difficult to understand what's going on. I think it is in part my fault because english subtitles are real fast (probably chinese is a very fast language) and cannot keep up reading/watching everything.
Anyway, I think starting at the beginning of the dark forest is the root of the problem. You are put in a world that saw already many events and you have to deal with that in half an episode. I understand that adapting part of the first book was also problematic, but considering that is three episodes that they are just walking they could have explained things better.
Don't watch it. It is become trash now.
Uh guys I think the YouTube channel that had the episodes got taken down. https://www.youtube.com/@DongfangAnimationClub/videos
Came here to say the same thing :( Anybody else have a place where we can watch ENG subbed episodes now?
I watched the 4th eps in bilibili tv, but it was subbed in a non-english language.
9anime (dot) to has it up to episode 3 no ETA on episode 4
I only see episode 1 and 2 on there
can't find episode 4 or 5
For a short moment, when she was introduced by name in the forth episode, I was wondering, why there is this new character Elena giving company to Frederick Tyler. My bet is, that she will later appear as his wallbreaker.
That would be quite repetative, simple and obvious. Well, simplicity would actually fit into the style of this series, but we have a similar and much more shocking case already there.
Info Update. Elena's dead in 10th episode and revealed to be Tyler's daughter in Episode 11th. This series is a disappointment.
Info Update. Elena's dead in 10th episode.
In her last scene, somebody notice she is saying 'BABA('Father' or 'Dad' in Mandarin)' while Tyler looking at screen.
In case you wanna ask, Elena did not exist in the novel. A('Father' or 'Dad' in Mandarin)' while Tyler is looking at the screen.en.
In case you wanna ask, Elena did not exist in the novel. I personally think she is the only reason that kept me watching this shitty series; now we can abandon it.
how many eps total?

Can't find ep 6 anywhere fml
The latest Trailer for the live action TV and web series is out: https://youtu.be/UsSEaxipyX0 It's January 15th after all.
I thought the books were super-interesting. Like most hard-SF, they're unconcerned with real human affairs, but that's OK because the big ideas are so thought-provoking.
So the nerd in me was looking forward to this series.
But, it's barely watchable. I was only able to make it through 5 episodes by hammering my fast-forward button.
The pacing is glacial. I'm someone who likes TV/film to take its time, to build up, to reveal the story gradually. But each episode of this show is padded out and ridiculously repetitive.
With a few exceptions, the acting is sub-par, bordering on pantomime. The direction is slow and obvious. The show repeats itself at every opportunity, hammering you with the same (obvious) ideas. This is amateur-level story-telling. It's not smart television. It feels like a throwback.
Very disappointed. I couldn't recommend this to anyone, not even fans of the books.
Is this series on a hiatus? Anyone have a release schedule?
They said they would resume march 4th (unknown why it's on hiatus), currently it is at episode 11
So episode 15 had the OST from the concept trailer in it (in a slightly altered version), almost as if they were trying to say, "Sorry guys, we totally messed things up, but from now on we'll do better!". I'm not kidding when I say that tears almost came to my eyes, not because the animation which we actually got was so brilliant when the music played, but because of the memories I still have from the concept trailer. One can only hope...
Concept trailer with Eng subs is here again:
