"Vava Voom" is the lead single and track from Bassnectar's studio album of the same name. It was released on March 27, 2012, and streamed exclusively on Rolling Stone. Those who pre-ordered the album instantly received the song. The accompanying visual video was directed by Joey Garfield, filmed in Los Angeles.[1] The two performed the song live at Bass Center Festival on July 29, 2016.

Background[]

The two traded tracks, then got into a studio in Los Angeles to record, where Bass revealed on November 28, 2011, "gonna record with @LUPEFIASCO next week, should we make punk rock VS dubstep or throb hop vs bass? CHOOSE ONE."[2] He told Rolling Stone during its premiere in March 2012, "[Lupe] was doing this crazy double-meaning story over the track, talking about hypnosis while waving his arms in the air as if casting a spell. 'Vava Voom' is where life shifts into time-warp speed, but you find yourself in an almost slow-motion trance."[3]

He said to MTV News, "That was one of the most interesting collaborations that I've had recently, partly because of the friendship I was able to make with him. He's a really creative person, and he rhymes fully improvisationally. So, he makes one sentence, and then you play back that sentence, and he comes up with another one. There's two sentences, and then he says the third sentence. And then, basically, this crazy poem unfolds. It was wicked."[4] In 2014, Bass noted, "so when i was working on Vava Voom with @LupeFiasco his DJ (Simon Morel) was just this incredibly kind, helpful amazing engineer."[5]

Critical reception[]

Sputnikmusic wrote in their review, "As a guest on "Vava Voom", Lupe Fiasco does a pretty lackluster job. He's buried under so many effects and sounds that it probably would've been best to just make the song an instrumental. It's not terrible, but Lupe Fiasco's performance is drastically tertiary compared to the beats Bassnectar pushes."[6] In contrast, HipHopDX opined, "Lupe Fiasco does a good job gluing chiptune and wub-wub together with a bit of Houston Hip Hop on the title track, fitting in well with Bassnectar's genre-blending style."[7] Consequence noted that it was the artist's "closest encounter to the light of commercial appeal," with AllMusic in agreeance, describing it as "most commercial."[8][9] Spin described the record as "Dubby, festival-trance gold. Peaks with sinister nods to jungle raves and Lupe Fiasco on the bass drop."[10]

Lyrics

[Intro]
Vava voom, into the room
This the tune
Bada-bing bada-boom

[Hook]
Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay
Vava voom (Yeah), into the room (Yeah)
This the tune
Bada-bing bada-boom (Yeah)

[Verse 1: Lupe Fiasco]
Live my life on fast forward
Feet up on that dashboard
Hands up off that steering wheel
Call that shit a crash course
I ain't have to take no class for it
Nickname used to be Fast Porsche
Why I gotta be so bad for
A hundred times on that blackboard
Reminisce on my school days
Mama like LL Cool J's
Drunk off all them punches
He gon' need like two A's
(Ay, ay)
Wake 'em up in like two days
Tell him he can have his bike back
But I really really like my new chain

[Hook]
Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay
Vava voom, into the room
This the tune
Bada-bing bada-boom
Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay
Vava voom (Yeah), into the room (Yeah)
This the tune
Bada-bing bada-boom (Yeah)

[Verse 2: Lupe Fiasco]
Live my life like I do
Her high heels on my side views
My eyes peeled for the 5-0
My horse power match my IQ
Light speed engage
My wifey's called 'gettin' paid'
My old chick was called 'minimum wage'
And my side piece is called 'getting a raise'
My wrist watch be so hypnotizing
My star ship be so enterprisin'
My transports be so energizing
We disappear when we next beside 'em
They love my verses, they memorize 'em
I don't even write 'em down, I improvise 'em
My ideas be IED's that West si-ide what I'm emphasizin' (Let's go!)

[Hook]
Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay
Vava voom, into the room
This the tune
Bada-bing bada-boom
Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay
Vava voom, into the room
This the tune
Bada-bing bada-boom

[Outro]
Boom-boom-boom-boom
Boom-boom-boom-boom

Ay, ay
Vava voom
Ay, ay
Vava voom, bada-bing bada-boom
