Despite hailing from the affluent Surinder Kapoor film family, actor Sanjay Kapoor’s journey in the industry has been tumultuous, marked by consecutive misfires and setbacks. Launched by his brother, producer Boney Kapoor, in the lead role in Satish Kaushik’s Prem (1995), and subsequently featuring in projects alongside A-listers, Sanjay’s career soon took a nosedive. It was sustained only by occasional offers for small roles from a few directors.

Sanjay Kapoor recently reflected on his cinematic journey, acknowledging that his elder brother Boney never offered him roles during his tough times and added that he understands it’s part of the business.

“My brother (Boney) didn’t cast me when I was going through the (tough) phase. When he made No Entry, he could have taken me instead of Fardeen Khan; but he didn’t,” he said while taking part in Shivani Pau’s podcast. “There already was Anil Kapoor and Salman Khan in its cast, so he could have sold the picture anyway. The picture would have done well anyway even if he took me. Things would have still happened the way it happened and No Entry would have been a blockbuster.”

“But he took Fardeen because, at that time, he was more sellable than me. I haven’t worked in my brother’s production in the last 20 years. When I was producing films and going through this low (phase), it was not that they didn’t love me. But it is business at the end of the day,” he added.

Recently, producer Boney Kapoor announced a sequel to No Entry, featuring actors Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Arjun Kapoor, replacing the original cast. He disclosed that his brother Anil Kapoor was upset over not being included in the upcoming film.

Festive offer

“Before I could tell my brother Anil about the No Entry sequel and the cast involved, he got angry as the news was already leaked. It was unfortunate that it was leaked. I know he wanted to be a part of the No Entry sequel, but there was no space. I wanted to explain why I did what I did,” he said during a chat with Zoom Entertainment in March.

“Varun and Arjun are great friends. Their chemistry could come out in the story, and Diljit is massive today. He has a great fan following. I wanted to make it relevant in today’s time. That’s why I did this casting. In the process, my brother is still not talking properly. I hope it all gets sorted out soon,” he added.
