55/100
The slowness of its narrative rhythm makes it a lot of damage but it compensates with a constant suspense that helps you not lose interest.
Definitely I cannot call it an open disappointment but frankly it's not a relevant film either.
Varg Veum X I mørket er alle ulver grå "At night all wolves are gray" (Mhz) Varg has a bigger budget so we get a trip to Budapest and arial drone shots. The plot on this one is notably better than the previous ones as well (with at least a few other characters that could be the "killer"). While most of it flows well, I am not sure the opening crime makes total sense in retrospect. Varg does continue his trend of getting smacked in the head which at this point is the best explanation for how his character is so bad at his PI job. Hamre as always tends to steal the show. 3 stars out of 5.
Director Alexander Eik manage to make a competent thriller out of a small budget and show again that he probably is the best director that was involved in the Varg Veum-series (he also did "Fallen Angels"). Jon Øigarden is hugely likeable as Veum's friend and there is a urgency and fast pace to the series that has been sadly lacking for most of these films. The villains are also good for a change even if the crime plot itself is so straight-forward that it is annoying.
Varg Veum sees an increase in it's budget in it's tenth release, so now they can afford a better cinematographer, Ane Dahl Torp, and a trip abroad.
With great powers come great responsibility, and with big budgets come American cliches. Bourne-style action scenes replace detective work, and intresting character relationships give way to explosions. Trond Espen Seim is not badass in English, but at least Bjørn Floberg has some cool lines.
Overall a lacklustre entry in an overdue franchise, but it has some memorable moments.
