The dream start to Wigan Athletic’s summer transfer

After a strong League One season, Wigan Athletic is expected to make summer additions.
Mike Danson, the owner, prioritises sustainability through sound business strategies.
Marvin Ekpiteta is a possible addition as a new centre back; Joe Adams might be sent on loan.

The Latics can look forward to a summer in which they are free to buy players ahead of the 2024–25 season after a strong 2023–24 League One season in which Wigan Athletic secured a top–half finish despite beginning the season on -8 following a points deduction and being subject to a transfer embargo for two consecutive windows.

Due to owner Mike Danson’s sustainability mindset and the club’s past stormy times under the financial mismanagement of the previous two ownership groups, Shaun Maloney’s side appears to be headed for a summer of prudent business.

The Latics’ retained list, which was revealed by the team on Friday, 10th March, will help supporters better understand the parts of the pitch the team may focus on strengthening this summer.

The Latics also revealed that Josh Magennis, the captain of the team, Charlie Wyke, a former forward for Bradford City, Stephen Humphrys, Tom Pearce, and goalkeeper Ben Amos will be departing Brick Community Stadium at the end of their contracts.

Meanwhile, loanees Luke Chambers, Martial Godo, Charlie Goode, Charlie Kelman, Liam Morrison, Liam Shaw and Kell Watts are all returning to their parent clubs.

Now that the club have sorted the majority of their internal contract negotiations, these deals would be the dream start to the summer transfer window:

In: Marvin Ekpiteta

Blackpool recently released defender Marvin Ekpiteta, who might be a fantastic acquisition to the Latics, since his contract at Bloomfield Road came to an end.

With Goode, Morrison, and Watts leaving on loan, the Greater Manchester team needs a new centre defender, and Maloney’s young team would benefit greatly from his experience.

In addition, Charlie Hughes, a promising young player for the Latics, has drawn interest from Ipswich Town and West Ham for a transfer after performing so well in Latics uniform that he was awarded caps for the England Men’s Elite team (previously the under 20s).

Maloney would need to get a strong defender like Ekpiteta even more if Hughes left Wigan this summer. Additionally, Ekpiteta’s accurate passes might make him a perfect center-half for a team that plays out of the back.
