We are accepting applications for the 2023-24 school year for PreK-Grade 12. We have two campus locations:

Lower School (PreK-Grade 5) | Upper West Side

Upper School (Grades 6-12) | Chelsea

BASIS Independent Manhattan, home of the Wildcats, is a PreK-Grade 12 private school providing students an internationally benchmarked curriculum. The BASIS Curriculum offers an advanced program brought to life by passionate Subject Expert Teachers in a culture of support. Our curriculum prioritizes foundational knowledge through a diverse selection of courses such as fine arts, engineering, logic, history, differentiated mathematics, Mandarin, and more.

Students also engage in club and athletic offerings.

In my 6 years so far here, I have had a wonderful experience. The workload is a lot, but the school offers many opportunities to help students who need it academically. The teachers are great, with the exception of a few that don't quite have control of the class. The only issues I have are the following:

1. If you are scared of your child doing poorly on tests, this is not the place for you, nor is any sufficiently rigorous school
2. If you intend for your child to play school sports, this is not the place for you. It is developing its sports culture, but it is still a young school
3. If you want a guarantee of a good class for your child, this is not the place for you. Each class is very different from the ones older or younger currently, and it may take a while for that to change.

Overall the school does an excellent job of teaching students not only extremely rigorous material, but also a strong work ethic and ability to plan that other schools fail to encourage.

Review BASIS Independent Manhattan

BASIS is heavily focused on STEM-readiness and has an environment good for students who are self-driven and hardworking. With such an emphasis on STEM, it may result in an imbalanced high school experience and curriculum. I've noticed that due to the school's young age, sports, clubs, traditions, culture, and school spirit have yet to develop. This school emphasizes hiring expert teachers in highly specialized research fields with doctoral degrees, rather than teaching experience. The culture and values of the students range from grade to grade.

There's a lot to say about BASIS. I have to say that I probably wouldn't be happier anywhere else, and anyone looking for academic rigor will find it here. A lot of the teachers are excellent, and they tend to want to see you do well. The majority of my, admittedly small, issues come with situations I'm not sure that would be better anywhere else. There's a tendency for things to break down at school, and the workload can be a lot to handle. There's a sizable portion of the student body that is filled with really, REALLY toxic people, but they're easy to avoid if you know better. The administration at the school is well-meaning, but they don't really do anything meaningful and tend to respond badly to severe issues. A couple of teachers tend to leave mid-year, but the replacements are decent. Generally, the best advice I could give is to take your own approach to BASIS, and try to find your own niche. Believe me, it won't be easy, but, in the end, it is definitely going to be worth it.
