Media Production & Technology Show’s 2024 Agenda

The Media Production & Technology Show (MPTS) has set its agenda for 2024, with an emphasis on emerging technologies. This year MPTS will host a new AI Forum in addition to the Media Technology Conference, in partnership with SMPTE UK.

Running May 15-16 in Olympia London, MPTS’ free seminar program will feature more than 250 speakers across eight theaters in keynote presentations, master classes, panel discussions and educational sessions.

The opening keynote is a director’s master class featuring four directors with recent hit shows, including James Hawes (Slow Horses) and James Strong (Mr. Bates vs. The Post Office). The Keynote Theatre will also include presentations from executive producer and author Sam McAlister (Scoop), Natasha Bondy and the team behind the ITV drama Mr. Bates vs. The Post Office, historian and broadcaster Dan Snow (History Hit podcast) and four-time winter Olympian and TV presenter Chemmy Alcott as part of BAFTA Albert’s sustainability series.

The Production Theatre will look at the current landscape of reality programming and will include speakers Marcel Theroux (The Playboy Bunny Murder) and Peter Ettedgui (Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story). Attendees will also get firsthand accounts of techniques for making creative choices under pressure with cinematographers Ashley Barron, ACS; Evelin van Rei, NSC; and Alana Mejía González. Further expert views on the state of reality programming will come from Windfall Films, Firecracker, Arrow Media and others.

Johnnie Burn, Academy Award and BAFTA winner for sound design on The Zone of Interest, will headline the Audio Theater, with additional presentations from the BBC/Glastonbury Festival team and a behind-the-scenes look at Netflix’s documentary series World War II: From the Frontlines.

The Post Production Theater will brings visitors insights from editor Paul Machliss (Baby Driver) in a fireside conversation, discussions on Residence Pictures’ workflow behind the BBC series The Gallows Pole, and a master class on VFX and grading with speakers from Picture Shop UK, Halo Post Production, Molinare, Ghost VFX and BlueBolt. Plus, there will be a closer look at the text-to-video app Sora with the UK Screen Alliance.

The State of the Nation in Broadcast Technology will uncover the latest advancements in transmission and the integration of AI and machine learning in content creation and distribution, with speakers from IMG, Gravity Media and Picture Shop. Broadcast Tech interviews will shine a spotlight on the women who are pioneering innovative technologies in their organizations, including Zoe Kennedy (BBC) and Lowri Davies (Premier League Productions).

The AI Forum will offer visitors expert guidance into how to use AI to their advantage through sessions examining the impact of AI on the workforce, the new skills and training required to work in the business, case studies on AI use in media (supported by research from GlobalData).

The Media Technology Conference Leaders Day will take place on May 15 as part of the MTPS Conference. It will feature a keynote by Simon Farnsworth, CTO of ITV, who will focus on ITV’s shift to a digital enablement strategy, while industry experts like Mark Patrick from the BBC and Andy Bell from Channel 4 will discuss the state of the broadcast industry in the session the post-transformation era. Topics include color science, contribution and distribution and AI for media. Leaders Day on May 15 is by invitation only, while Day 2 on May 16 is open to all MPTS attendees.
