A transfer ban for disrespecting a transfer ban and individual IIHF disqualification from representing a country disqualified from competing in IIHF tournaments.

Damn I love law

Sanctions:

  • CSKA Hockey Club - Twenty-four-month transfer ban on all international transfers that starts from the day the original one-year transfer ban concludes (August 11, 2024 until August 10, 2026)

  • Fedotov - Six-month suspension from playing at the club level (which shall be served upon his return from the NHL to any club under/within an IIHF Member National Federation jurisdiction) [Worthless if he stays in North America]

  • Fedotov - Three-year suspension from playing in all IIHF Competitions as defined in Bylaw 1, which will include the Olympic Games.

  • Russian Ice Hockey Federation - 1,000,000 CHF (one million Swiss Francs) fine [$1,098,784.00 USD or approximately one sandwich at Zurich Airport]

Would’ve been nice to actually include the decision in the post

“The IIHF has suspended Flyers goalie Ivan Fedotov from international play for 3 years, including Olympics, as sanctions for him and his KHL club violating his initial entry-level contract with the Flyers.

He also gets a 6-month ban at club level should he leave the NHL.

CSKA Moscow is now banned from international transfers for 2 years (from 8/11/24 to 8/10/26) and the Russian Ice Hockey Federation is fined 1 million francs ($1.1 million USD)”

So Fedotov, a Russian, is temporarily banned from playing in IIHF competitions for Russia, which is already indefinitely banned from competing in IIHF events? Makes sense.

I imagine he's also banned from playing under the Olympic Athletes of Russia (what the athletes play under)

This is for playing with CSKA while under contract with Philadelphia. Wasn’t he trying to leave and then was arrested for ‘evading military service’, forcing him to stay and play for CSKA? Seems s bit unfair…

u/respaaaaaj avatar

Iirc he literally got called into military service and banished to Siberia yeah. He didn't have a choice in the matter and pretending he does so that they can treat this as a "everyone did something wrong" and not further ostracize Russia from the international sports community is bullshit.

Pretty much worthless punishment considering Russia is banned from international competition and he is likely to stay in the NHL.

Fedotov can represent Finland at the international level after his return to international competition, he was born in Lappeenranta and as far as I know, he still has citizenship. Russia and the IIHF have both screwed him really badly with this whole situation and now the judgment

One million Swiss franc fine.

IIHF being greedy as hell lmfao

Not enough if anything. Russia just seems to enjoy playing the game of "fuck around and find out"
