ADELA MARIE KISHENSKY

December 22, 1959 - March 10, 2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Adela Marie Kishensky. She was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that moved so quickly that it made it impossible for any treatment to occur. On Sunday, March 10 at 9:25 p.m., surrounded by her loved ones, she took her last breath.

She is survived by her son Michael Kishensky, her mother Natalie Kishensky (Hunchak), brothers Donald, Gene, and John, and her niece Mia van Leeuwen. She will be missed by numerous aunts and uncles, cousins, and her dear friends. Adela was predeceased by her father Michael Kishensky.

Adela did life well and lived it on her own terms. Her adventurous spirit and desire to care for others made for an exciting nursing career that spanned 30 plus years working in hospitals in Hawaii, Tucson, and Winnipeg. In recent years, she volunteered as a nurse at Ukrainian Catholic Camp Park, Operation Walk in Nicaragua, and at Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre caring for injured and orphaned animals.

Adela’s greatest achievement is bringing her son Michael into the world, whom she adored with a full and unconditional heart. Adela lives on in Michael, who has clearly inherited her work-ethic, empathy, and special way of connecting with the people around him.

Adela had great faith in her Catholic religion and was proud of her Ukrainian heritage. She is also known for her love of animals, travel, and trivia, and a kind and beautiful soul that has touched many people in this life. Those who knew Adela cannot deny her incredible sense of humour, that she had within her up until the end, making those around her smile and laugh despite the heaviness of her last days.

Adela’s final journey will be a road trip to the Zipchen Family Cemetery in Hafford, Saskatchewan, where her body will finally be laid to rest. (We will be sure to pack the twizzlers!)

Thank you to all the staff, nurses, and doctors at Health Sciences Centre, and to our cousin Tammy Klos, who did a phenomenal job navigating and advocating for Adela’s health, along with a team of angels, helping us move through this incomprehensibly swift process.

Funeral service will be held at Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church, 505 Watt Street, on Saturday, March 16 with Voyage Funeral Home. Viewing at 10:00 a.m. Service at 11:00 a.m. Livestream:

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Adela’s memory to Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre and to pancreatic cancer research through the Project Purple organization.

May her memory be eternal!

  • Adela was such a lively, lovely Beautiful person! She was so smart and gave a lot to others. I went to Hawaii years ago with my friend Rachel and we stayed with Adela. She was so independent and went after her dreams. She loved traveling and living in the USA. She liked to laugh. This what I remember about her. She recently helped me very much during my own health crisis. She was patient and listened and offered hope. I am so grateful to her for that! I am so sorry that she is gone because it was really before her time. She gave so much of herself, looking after her family . She was volunteering a year ago at Easter with her son , serving food to the homeless. This is her text message to me about this… Happy Easter! I'm so exhausted.... It's been a looooooong weekend of cooking and cleaning and church going! Michael and I also volunteered feeding the homeless this afternoon for several hours.... A great experience for both of us. Hope you're doing well... talk to you soon! And then she texted me about my own situation: It will get better..... the first few days will be tough as you are not around other people much these days. Give them a chance. Give yourself a chance! I truly appreciate her and her compassionate nature. She has a wonderful family -! The Kishenskys are such a fun bunch - always laughing together and family is so important to them. I met many of the extended family over the years:. Mia and Tammy and I even first lived at John’s Uncle Nick’s on Walmer Rd in the Annex in Toronto when I first moved there to fly with Air Canada. Thank you Adela for your kindness and to the Kishenskys I am very sorry for the loss of your beautiful daughter and sister. I was so glad to see all of you this past weekend at the funeral.
