How does Alex play the finger picking on the guitar with no nails?!

Discussion

He plays piano and that’s kind of difficult with nails. He also picks with his fingers too while playing body paint and other songs, how?!! 😂 and the sound comes out like he’s using a pick!!

Also, does anyone have tabs for the car song?

I don’t think fingerpicking is done with nails most of the time. He’s using the fingerprint part of his thumb to ‘pick’ in body paint and other songs

But what about the car? Is it the same?

Ah with that song he’s fingerpicking the strings by ‘flicking’ his fingers inwards, I think the part of his fingers that touches the strings is around the tips. His nails may definitely be hitting the strings too but the picking action is not entirely done with nail, mostly with fingertip

Just wondering if you play guitar? Fingerpicking is still very easy without long nails. The Beatles fingerpicked without long nails just fine and popularized some techniques too.

Of course it helps but IMO it’s very rare for people to grow out their nails for picking. You can also pretty easily tell he’s using the fleshy part of his fingertip to pick the strings - there’s a ton of attack in the Body Paint solo for example that you only get by pressing into the string like you would wit the fleshy part of your finger tip, and not with a long nail or guitar pick you attach to your finger.

Yeah I do play. Thanks!!

tbf the only thing that kinda changes is the tone, but nails or no nails really just comes down to what you’re used to. i have really short nails on both hands and i can fingerpick just fine. some other guitarists prefer long nails while others to just fine with short nails. all comes down to preference really

You don’t need nails to fingerpick. Picking with your finger tips leads to a warmer sound. You do need nails for finger style and classic guitar though but it’s mostly for precision and tone.

I'm not sure exactly but if it really sounds like he's using a pick then it could be those kinds of guitar picks you actually wear on your fingers. I've never used them but I think they're used often for fingerpicking and bluesy stuff.

Otherwise it's completely possible to fingerpick without fingernails but it will sound different probably

Idk maybe. But I’ve watched the late Berlin show and they zoom to the guitar and I don’t see any. Idk if it’s the lighting and stuff. I also watched the lalapalpoza (idk if I spelled it correctly) and same thing.

You don’t finger pick with nails ever.

Really? I always see people on tiktok and Instagram and everywhere finger picking with their nails.

Hrmm that seems really strange to me then. They must be on nylon only then.

Hozier does it and I don’t think he uses nylon strings, I don’t know much about guitar tho
