It’s only a matter of time until his luck runs out. With his life hanging by a thread, fans can’t help but wonder whether Bobby will die on 9-1-1 after he faced what could be his final fire.

Robert “Bobby Nash” is the captain of the Los Angeles Fire Department’s fictional Station 118 in 9-1-1. The series, which premiered in 2018 and also includes spin-off 9-1-1: Lone Star, follows the personal and professional lives of first responders — including police officers, paramedics, and dispatchers — in Los Angeles, California.

Bobby, played by Peter Krause, is one of five original cast characters left on 9-1-1, along with Athena Grant-Nash (played by Angela Bassett); Evan “Buck” Buckley (played by Oliver Stark); Henrietta “Hen” Wilson (played by Alisha Hinds); and Howard “Chimney” Han (played by Kenneth Choi.) While Krause has remained as one of 9-1-1‘s original cast members for seven seasons, that all could change ahead of the Season 7 finale, which shows him in grave danger like he’s never seen before. So does Bobby Nash die in 9-1-1 and what happens to him? Read on for what we know so far.

Does Bobby Nash die in 9-1-1?

Bobby Nash - 9-1-1

9-1-1 sparked speculation around Bobby’s death in Season 7, Episode 9, “Ashes, Ashes,” after Bobby wakes up in his and his wife Athena Nash-Grant’s house to a fire, with Athena unconscious in the bedroom. The last scene shows Bobby rescuing Athena from their home and making sure she was safe before he grabbed his chest and fell over unconscious.

The preview for the 9-1-1 Season 7 finale, “All Fall Down,” showed Athena waking up in a hospital asking for Bobby, who is intubated and unconscious. The preview continued with Athena sitting by Bobby’s side as she tells him, “I’m here, baby. They’re saying that you may already be lost. But I just don’t know if I can bear that.”  The final scene of the preview showed Bobby having a seizure before viewers hear a flatline sound.

Prior to the finale, Bobby revealed to Athena in the Season 7 penultimate episode that he planned to commit suicide once he saved 148 people as a firefighter — the same amount that lost their lives in a fire he caused due to his alcoholism years ago. “I’m not supposed to be here,” Bobby says.

So does Bobby die in 9-1-1? ABC nor Peter Krause, who plays Bobby, has confirmed that he’s leaving the series. However, Krause did tell The Wrap in March 2024 that he believed his character should be already dead for the amount of danger he’s been put in. “As an audience member, you almost hope they die together,” Krause told the site at the time about Bobby and Athena’s cruise ship hijacking in the Season 7 premiere. “I was filming it and thinking, ‘Let’s just Romeo and Juliet this thing right now.’ I know the show’s gotta go on, but we’re never going to be able to top this.”

Before 9-1-1‘s Season 7 premiere, fans suspected that the series would write off multiple of its cast members following its move from FOX to ABC. The series, which premiered on FOX in 2018, was canceled by the network in 2023 before it was saved by ABC. 9-1-1 premiered its first season on ABC in March 2024.

Deadline reported at the time of 9-1-1‘s cancellation by FOX that the network chose not to renew the series because of the high financial cost to produce it. Sources told Deadline that 9-1-1 costs $9 to $10 million per episode to make due to the expensive visual effects and stunts to create the series’ disasters, as well as its highly paid cast.

According to a 2021 report by Deadline, Krause is the second highest-paid cast member on 9-1-1 at $300,000 per episode. He’s second only to Angela Bassett, who plays Athena Grant-Nash and makes $450,000 per episode. Given 9-1-1‘s usual episode count, which ranges from 10 to 18 episodes per season, Krause’s contract could pay him anything from $3 million to $5.4 million per season. Following 9-1-1‘s move from FOX to ABC, fans suspected that the series could lose some of its original cast members to make the show more affordable for the network. While all of 9-1-1‘s original cast members from when it was on FOX returned for the premiere of Season 7 on ABC, it’s still possible that some exits could be planned before the season is over, which may explain Bobby’s danger in the finale.

Some fans, however, speculate that Bobby will live based on 9-1-1‘s preview of the Season 7 finale. “Okay they showed all the bad signs in the promo, means he’ll live,” a user wrote in a Reddit thread. Another user commented, “Exactly. Otherwise they’re already showing their hand, and then what would be the point of anyone watching the episode?” One more user compared Bobby to Dr. Richard Webber on Grey’s Anatomy, who has been on the series since its first season. “In my head, Bobby is the Webber of 9-1-1. He will always be around after a million seasons of a show that should’ve ended one hundred years ago ( seriously looking at you, Grey’s ). I refuse to let this bubble pop because I love Bobby,” a user wrote.

9-1-1 is available to stream on Hulu.
