November 2023 was the corresponding Group I fixture, where the Aussies laboured to a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Lions of Canaan.
We look back at that clash as well as our meeting in the 2019 edition of the AFC Asian Cup™.
The two teams first met in 1939 as a part of a five-match series in Australia and indeed did not cross paths again until 80 years later at the Asian Cup.

Almost 80 years after their previous match-up, Australia faced Palestine at the AFC Asian Cup and needing to bounce back from its opening loss to Jordan. Jamie Maclaren scored his maiden Socceroos goal with a header from Tom Rogic's inviting delivery before Awer Mabil doubled the advantage two minutes later at the Rashid Stadium. The winger arrived at the back post to volley home Chris Ikonomidis' floated cross. Substitute Apostolos Giannou put the result beyond doubt with a header off a short corner whipped in by Ikonomidis for his second assist of the game.

Fresh from its 7-0 rout of Bangladesh, Australia were in for a much tougher contest against Palestine. Following a cagey start Australia broke the deadlock on 18 minutes through a tried and tested formula. Craig Goodwin expertly swung in a corner which was headed home by Harry Souttar. But it was far from smooth sailing after that with the Subway Socceroos forced to absorb a lot of pressure with Maty Ryan coming to the rescue and producing an absolutely sensational save to deny Tamer Seyam from close range before half time.
