Mystery Mountain Project II: Redemption was a success!

The Mystery Mountain Project 2 team arrived in Vernon, BC July 6, 2022, with all their equipment in tow. After a slow start due to unusually warm weather and rain, their plans changed more than once but they did summit Mt. Munday in the Waddington Range. We can say we truly know what it must have been like for Don and Phyllis Munday in the 1920’s to explore the glaciers and peaks of the Waddington Range. 🗻

Left to Right, we have Greg Gransden, Julie Dagenais, Ron Rusk, Bryan Thompson, Mark Hurst, and Janet Wong.

We’ve had three years of intense preparations and planning and the team is confident and ready to return to Waddington in the Coast Mountains of BC. As it was with the Mundays in the 1920’s, the painful lessons we learned from our first attempt in 2018 via the Homathko River valley have been put to good use. Equipment has been modified, tested and in some cases, replaced (we have new, extremely solid pack frames!)

New Documentary Film is Available Now!

Film synopsis: In 1926, a young couple set off into the British Columbia wilderness in search of an undiscovered mountain now known as Mount Waddington, the highest and perhaps most daunting peak on Canada’s Pacific Coast. A century later, a group of would-be-adventurers tries to retrace their steps. And they’re determined to do it using only period equipment, similar to what was used by the Munday expedition in 1926, without any modern technology whatsoever. They soon find they’ve bitten off more than they can chew and it will take everything they’ve got to avoid disaster.

  • Mystery Mountain Expedition to Mt. Waddington

In the summer of 2018, we undertook our second major expedition – the Mystery Mountain Project. Following in the steps of intrepid adventurers Don and Phyllis Munday to re-enact as close to the day as possible their first 1926 exploratory expedition to Mount Waddington. In comparison to our first expedition, the 2016 Bugaboo Spire Centennial Climb, our team went completely authentic. Based on archive photographs, vintage samples, sketches and descriptions of the day the team constructed their own wooden-frame backpacks, sleeping bags and Egyptian cotton tents.

  • Mystery Mountain – the Saga Continued in 2022

In the summer of 2022 we went back to finish what we started. Challenges faced us at every turn and the full story will be told in our newsletter and the upcoming documentary film. Thank You to our sponsors and partners and to all the members of the Canadian EH Society for your continuing support.

Who we are

The Canadian Explorations Heritage Society is a federally registered charitable organization. For fun we call ourselves The Canadian EH Society. Really, we are a bunch of Canadians that are passionate about the great outdoors. We believe in the natural legacy of Canada. We also love the stories of the early exploits into the wilds by mountaineers and other adventurers. It is amazing what they were able to accomplish without complete maps or equipment as we have today.

Our mission

We are on a mission to raise awareness about the rich history afforded to us by early Canadian explorers. We continue this tradition by going into the wilds and sharing the stories that make up part of Canada’s history.

Bold explorers, both men and women, journeyed through wild lands pushing their limits through difficult terrain. They went on quests of discovery, empowered by a spirit of adventure and a love of nature. They accomplished incredible feats of physical and mental stamina. Often enduring the harshest conditions and climates, they traveled further afield than most. They did so to further scientific, geological and cartographic knowledge.

The achievements of these explorers form an enduring part of Canada’s heritage, and the lives and stories of these early adventurers form the cultural backbone of this great land.

Our goal

Our goal is to follow in the footsteps of notable expeditions. By re-creating these first forays into the wilderness we live the experience of what it must have been like for them. Venturing into unknown territory, they overcame numerous challenges with imagination, creativity, daring and courage. These are our Canadian stories, and we want to make them as tangible as possible for all Canadians.

The adventures we re-create are authentic, complete with period specific gear and clothing as well as the technology of the day. We capture these stories through documentary films and photographic exhibitions. By touring the films and speaking about our experiences we are able to connect with Canadians in a very personal way. History seems to come alive.

Help Fund an Expedition

Expeditions are marvels of logistics, gear acquisition, food preparation, permits, transportation, and a myriad of other details. They don’t happen without many hours of volunteered time and dedication from our members. We seek partnerships and sponsors to help fund the costs. We also turn to ordinary Canadians to help us achieve our goals.
