This is a beautiful location on the outskirts of Barrow. The Abbey ruins are set with a back drop of a woodland walk and an Amphitheatre in full view. The Abbey is a large site and it felt like it was so tranquil and spacious to walk around. There is plenty of seating areas to enjoy the full views.
I have to mention the recent construction of the night stairs, which takes you up to a viewing platform. The views are spectacular.
The guide book really does enhance the visit as there is a detailed map with a great description of the history of the Abbey.
There is a cafe just outside the grounds, and coffee and ice-creams available in the gift shop. I had a lovely view of the whole grounds at the picnic area at the end of the visit.
It is a beautiful and peaceful location. I will be back, often.

A short ferry ride from Rampside near Barrow takes you to Piel Island.
When we went a storm was coming in with thunder and lightening which made it more dramatic.
We had time to visit the Castle before the storm arrived and we headed for the pub.
The king of Piel ( the landlord ) served us and a couple of drinks later the storm had passed.
Having read the history of the island we were so pleased to visit.
The Ship Inn does not serve food but crisps are available.
    Highly recommended.

So glad we made the effort to drive up whilst staying in Morecombe. The journey was lovely with a stop off at charming Grange Over Sands, and Sandscale Haws is one of the best beaches I’ve been to in the UK. Such gorgeous views over to the mountains and golden sand dunes to explore. Note there are no facilities here.

Beautiful beaches, good parking, public parking. Shop next to bus stop. Multiple beaches on the island, wildlife sanctuary. Plenty of shops on the island including Tesco’s. Pubs and restaurants notably the crown, the ferry hotel. Campsite on the island with a bar and a pool
