based on my own experience i’d recommend watching this in full and not in 24 parts on tiktok
Congratulations to Olivia Colman for winning the Academy Award for Best. No, not Best Actress. She was finally recognised as Best. This is my headcanon.
This is a clever, well-realised short built around the sort of magic-realist premise that you'd find in a McSweeney's short story, except with McSweeney's it always feels like pot luck as to whether the premise will be developed or whether the author will just pat themselves on the back for coming up with it. In The Kármán Line you know it'll turn out to be a metaphor for something, and this almost qualifies as suspense - what's it going to be? When is director Oscar Sharp going to tip his hand?
I worked it out…
I lost my mum to cancer at the age of 16. Somehow, The Karman Line manages to capture the harrowing journey and ordeal of living with, trying to support, and having to come to terms with someone you know isn’t destined to be in this world much longer. It does it in a way that isn’t overt, and tries to hide behind a metaphor, but the sheer emotion captured in the 24 minutes Colman is on screen is eerily accurate.
I’ve never, ever found a film that deals with losing a close family member as heartbreakingly well as this short does.
P.S. I may have written this review through tear stained eyes. Sorry if it doesn’t make much sense.
Ibu Olivia Colman is such a great actress I just want to hug her 😭😭
Bizarre but apt portrayal of how grief can take its toll. MY 2019 best actress Oscar winner.
just making this clear: if i could put olivia colman in my pocket, i most definitely would.
olivia colman ..she’s got a point, she’s an icon, she’s a legend, and she is the moment
Sobbing so hard rn, need to give my parents a hug because what the fuck was this. No right to be so horribly real.
Seriously, I’m not sure a short film has ever moved me as much as this had, you can watch here.
It has a Kafkaesque feel to it and I will always have a place in my heart for Kafka. The story was quite obvious as to what it was depicting but without mentioning it directly it hurt so much more, you could fit whatever relates to you right there.
Performances, uh yeah of course Olivia killed it. She’s such a great talent, she never fails a portrayal to me.
Still crying over it.
You can watch this excellent short film here so please do, as I don't really want to give too much away except that it takes an initially fantastical and silly premise and swiftly develops it into a deeply poignant and affecting metaphor. Olivia Colman is, of course, incredible in the lead role, with Shaun Dooley and Chelsea Corfield offering believable strong support. There's even a little role for Julia Watson who once played Baz in Casualty, playing here - yes, you guessed it - a doctor.
