その後、なんとかマヘリアのリヴェンジをしたく、こちらを入手。(僕が入手した時は送料込みで三千円超えていましたが、2017/9/24現在では二千円台で入手できるみたいですね。)したらまぁ、一枚目から、びっくり仰天ですよ。「ニューポート1958」ではライヴであるにも関わらず、どこか静的で、ＣＤ一枚通して聴くのが辛かったのですが、こちらはなんと言いますか。タイトル曲はそれなりだけど、二曲目から、躍動感のある歌声が聴こえて、ぶっ飛ばされました！。コレだよ、コレコレ、やはり、黒人音楽は腰に来なくちゃね！(笑)。みたいな感じで、10枚もの物量を、最後まで一気に聴いちゃいましたよ。
不思議なのは、ディスク10は前述の「ニューポート1958」なのですが、こちらはすんなり聴き通せたこと。LPと同じ曲数なのも良かったのかもしれないし、ここに至るまで９枚分がっつり洗脳(笑)されたのが良かったのかもしれないです。これはお買い得ですぜ、奥さん！。これぞまさしく五つ星の価値があるってぇ言うもんですよ！。
なお、各ディスクごとにサブタイトルがついているんですが、それが、LP時代のオリジナル・アルバムのものなのか、この編集盤用に用意されたものなのかは不明です。各ディスクの収録時間的には、元ネタのオリジナル・アルバムがあるのかなぁ、て気もするんですが、どうなんでしょうね。

Note that despite the claims of the one star review, this set contains 158 tracks on the ten CDs. I am at a loss to explain that other reviewer's remarks.
This set of CDs covers Mahalia Jackson's career from about 1937 to through 1958. The tracks are amazingly clean and clear although a few tracks do exhibit some minor surface noise. The set ends with Mahalia Jackson Live at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1958. With the exception of the last CD, there are only a couple of tracks that are newer than 1955.
Unlike the four CDs of the two sets, Gospels Spirituals & Hymns and Gospels Spirituals & Hymns Vol. 2 , this set is monophonic with the exception of the Newport Jazz Festival CD. The two volumes of the other sets are about half stereo and half monophonic. With those sets and this set, you'll have a fairly complete retrospective of Mahalia Jackson's career.

This set of CDs covers Mahalia Jackson's career from about 1937 to through 1958. The tracks are amazingly clean and clear although a few tracks do exhibit some minor surface noise. The set ends with Mahalia Jackson Live at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1958. With the exception of the last CD, there are only a couple of tracks that are newer than 1955.
Unlike the four CDs of the two sets, Gospels Spirituals & Hymns and Gospels Spirituals & Hymns Vol. 2 , this set is monophonic with the exception of the Newport Jazz Festival CD. The two volumes of the other sets are about half stereo and half monophonic. With those sets and this set, you'll have a fairly complete retrospective of Mahalia Jackson's career.

Per poc més de 10 EUR tens una bona i extensa mostra de l'art de Mahalia Jackson. Les gravacions són majorment dels anys 50 i no tinc prou coneixements de la discografia de la cantant per saber si són discs complets o una selecció de cançons. Algunes sones molt molt bé. Altres no tant. El so és, per tant, irregular, dins del mateix CD, però acceptable en general. I les cançons són una meravella totes. El darrer CD és un concert sencer.
Com a primera presa de contacte amb el repertori de Mahalia, com era el meu cas, és un cofre altament recomanat.

Yes, Mahalia was the greatest female gospel singer - no doubt.
This is where soul music started, in my view.
Together with Sam Cooke, she paved the way to soul music.
I had no idea she had recorded so much great recordings with minimal instrumentation.
Yes, this great collection has quite some overlap with the Properbox-4-cd-set
(most recordings were made between late 40's till '58).
But in terms of value-for-money, this 10 CD set is far superior (I own them both).
Disc 10 is (most of) the Live at New Port Jazz Festival 1958 concert. A triumph!
