Eccentric LAPD detective Michael Raines has what some would call a unique ability -- he's able to have detailed conversations with deceased crime victims. With their help, Raines is able to retrace their lives leading up to the murder, in hopes of finding the culprit. Naturally, this causes a bit of friction with his boss, Capt. Daniel Lewis, as well as with fellow officers Remy Boyer, Michelle Lance and civilian employee Carolyn. Raines is fortunately aided by ex-LAPD partner and full-time conscience Charlie. All the while, Raines struggles to accept his gift (or burden), as it forces him to examine his past.

Critics Consensus
Raines is a conventional police drama that is elevated by Jeff Goldblum's charisma and quirky persona.

[Jeff] Goldblum is in almost every scene, and has lots of dialogue, too. Often it's delivered in a beaten-down, low-decibel monotone, making the character both hard to hear and bear.

Raines is an average, unoriginal series.

I'd have preferred to watch Goldblum in an over-the-top noir projection than a projection of what networks know might actually last.

As close-ended procedurals go, "Raines" certainly offers an intriguing hook, but I'm not sure it's one with much staying power.

Though the series' premise has the potential for Ghost Whisperer-type cheesiness, it's classed up by [Jeff] Goldblum's quirky persona and tight writing.

If the tone settles down in the right direction, and if the storylines improve, this could be a fine addition to my personal viewing lineup. I don't think it'll ever be anything great, mind you, but not everything has to be great.
