So there I was on a dismal evening in April 1985, sat comfortably in the Ambassadors Theater, New York City, awaiting the curtain-up of a new musical "Leader Of The Pack" a show celebrating Ellie Greenwich's song writing career, when Wow! it all broke loose. From above the stage came this "tsumami" of noise, the famous Phil Spector cacophony "Wall of Sound" causing major palpitations of the ear drums with the opening bars of "River Deep, Mountain High" immediately followed by the the appearance on stage of the powerfully voiced wonderful, Darlene Love, belting out the most exciting and rousing version of this number I have ever heard. The audience went wild and stood, cheering, clapping and dancing but being an Englishman I held myself in check and remained seated - the only 'prat' in the audience!
The lady immediately in front of me was particularly noisy and energetic somewhat spoiling my view of the stage and I was just about to tap her on the shoulder and ask her to calm down when the New Yorker friend who had invited me to the show grabbed my arm and said "That's Dionne Warwick you are about to berate!" So I thought discretion was the better part of valour, and stood myself, joining in the general mass excitement and, in fact spent quite a bit of the evening so engaged, behind Miss Warwick.....who was a lovely mover with a great figure.
The show was typical of a "Juke Box Musical" with a thin storyline but Ellie Greenwich's music was phenomenal, all the songs reading like a top ten parade of the past decade and the highlight of the particular evening I attended, was a personal appearance of the great lady herself, Ellie Greenwich joining in the final few numbers such as "Da Doo Ron Ron". A truly memorable evening which you can experience by listening to this disc. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
