The University of Otago offers a range of taught postgraduate programmes, including postgraduate certificates and diplomas.

Postgraduate certificates and diplomas can be studied without extensive knowledge or experience in a particular subject area, however, this is either recommended or a requirement in order to progress with study in some disciplines.

Both types of postgraduate study normally require a minimum qualification of a completed Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent). Many also offer a Distance Learning option or are only available to study via distance. Certificates and diplomas are comprised of papers (or other work) at 400-level or above.

Postgraduate certificates generally comprise two papers, which can be taken in one semester or split across two semesters, depending on the student’s preference.

Postgraduate diplomas can be studied as a continuation of a postgraduate certificate, or independently, and are comprised of four papers in total. The diploma can also be split into separate semesters of study if preferred.

Each has its own admission and subject requirements and are offered in many subject areas.
