Two nine-year-old girls—rude Luise Palfy and respectful shy Lotte Körner—meet on a summer camp. Apart from their different hair-do, they look alike. They have never seen each other before, but soon find out that they are identical twins. It turns out that their parents divorced, each keeping one of the girls. They decide to trade places at the end of the summer. Lottie curls her hair, Lisa braids hers, and both go off to where they have never been before. The adventure begins.

I love lying in bed and watching old movies during the holidays:)
(I actually overslept so hard on the 26th that it was already too late to get up before lunch and so I decided to have lunch in bed while watching this movie:D)
Most of you won't be familiar with Erich Kästner's children's book "Lottie and Lisa", but you probably know the 1998 film "The Parent Trap" by my queen Nancy Meyers (whom I love so much that I made a ranked list of her filmography) or maybe even the earlier adaptation from 1961 of the same name. as a lover of the 1961 version of the parent trap (an adaptation from the same source material) i was a little weary of taking on the first adaptation. but it's oh so sweet & must have been so fun to watch the first time around before all the future rewrites of the plot.
I found this to be more successful and enjoyable in terms of the kids point of view than the 1961 version, but I think the 1961 succeeds in the adult romance plot more than this one because it just doesn't get any time to develop here.
Sure this version has Erich Kästner narrating his own book to us but does it have Lindsay Lohan feeding her future stepmother a lizard in the wild California hills
so cute and probably the truest of the adaptations as far as the original book by Kästner goes
Erich Kästner is the author of some of Germany’s most famous children’s books. One of his story’s however has gained fame around the world : Das Doppelte Lottchen. The story of two identical twin girls, separated by their parents when they were babies, who meet as teenagers in summer camp and decide to switch identities when returning to their homes has been made into movies and TV movies in the US and Germany numerous times. This was the first one. Made in Germany in 1950, it is narrated by the author himself and very faithful to the original story, no wonder because Kästner wrote the screenplay himself. The story is of course well known, very tame but a solid basis of all the variations that were to come in later years. 6.9/10

Who knew that The Parent Trap was based on this old German movie based on a children's book written by none other than Erich Kästner? I hadn't realized that he was the source of so many of the German children's movies I've heard of but never seen. When I was in college we read some of his poems so I just thought of him as a poet.
Anyway this is really delightful. Definitely better than I was expecting despite that it won the award for best film at the very first German film awards in 1951. I think I prefer it to the later American versions I've seen.
