BBC chooses LIPA student to compose theme tune for police drama

A teeenage LIPA (Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts) student has composed the theme tune and score for a hit BBC police drama.

Patrick Bennett, whose family hails from Wallasey, created music for the second series of Granite Harbour, which hits TV screens today (2 May).

The 19-year-old began his muscial journey aged 10, hoping to emulate his guitar heroes Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana. Patrick soon mastered not only guitar, but bass guitar, piano and a number of other instruments as well.

Inspired by Thomas Newman’s Oscar-nominated score for 1917, Patrick turned his attention to composition for TV and film.

Aged 18, Patrick secured a place at the prestigious Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) on the BA Contemporary and Commercial Music course. It was in Liverpool that he approached Roag Best (brother of ex-Beatles’ drummer Pete Best and son of Apple managing director Neil Aspinall) to manage him.

Roag then contacted award-winning film producer, Colin McKeown MBE, a 50-year veteran of the television and film industry, and founder of LA Productions.

Colin is known for his commitment to nurturing new talent, and showcasing a wealth of creativity both on and off camera. Impressed by the 18-year-old Patrick, Colin gave him the opportunity to compose an original score for the second series of Granite Harbour.

Patrick didn’t disappoint and his score for the series was accepted by both Colin and the BBC – making him the youngest composer in British television history.

Following this success, Patrick has been approached to do a feature film score which is currently under negotiation.
